Composer
Sandy Shanin is a composer and songwriter who has written music for five musicals: Curses (with Harriet Belkin), Women in Love (with Meredith Stiehm), The Spark: Hannah Senesh and Shahrazad: Heads or Tales (both with Noelle Donfeld), and Ohio (with Ken Gardner and Sara B. Ware). Some of these works have been finalists or semi-finalists in the O'Neill National Theatre Conference and the Chicago Stages Festival, and her musicals have had staged readings in Los Angeles, Chicago and/or London.
She has been writing, singing and recording songs of affirmation since 1990. Their lyrics can be individualised to make the affirmations personal. Therapists have used them with clients, individuals have used them, and so have Unity Spiritual Communities. Shanin wrote them first to heal herself. Her album of affirmation songs is called I Live in This Moment.
Her lyrics for "Jocheved" were included in the oratorio Women of Valor by composer Andrea Clearfield, recorded on Albany Records and performed by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. She also writes songs for causes, including SongsOfLove.com, and makes Visual Music collaborations with her husband, Bill Lasarow, publisher of Visual Art Source and ArtScene.
