Percussionist
Marla Leigh Goldstein is a frame drummer, percussionist, flautist, composer and educator. Her site describes her as one of the few female professional frame drummers in the world today, and as an award-winning, internationally recognized performer and teacher. She began playing classical music at the age of three and never stopped. She holds a BFA and an MFA in Percussion from California Institute of the Arts, where she studied with Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Randy Gloss and Layne Redmond.
Marla is drawn to rhythm from cultures around the world, and to the way it brings people together. She is CEO of Frame Drum Academy, a global community of frame drum students that offers signature online programs. She also created her own line of signature frame drums with the Cooperman Company.
Her debut album, Rhythms of Tof Miriam, was recorded in Israel and released with a music video in May 2020. It honors the ancient lineage of women frame drummers through song and visuals.
Marla teaches frame drum workshops and residencies for conventions, yoga studios, universities and synagogues. She also offers Rhythm & Rejuvenation Retreats, co-ed drumming and wellness retreats held at places such as Esalen Institute, Harbin and Kalani. She has presented clinics at Tambouri Mundi Festival in Germany, the Zurich Arts Festival, NAFDA Festivals in Vermont and New Jersey, California PAS Day of Percussion and the Asheville Percussion Festival.
She believes in the power of music to help transform consciousness. Her yoga offerings draw on drumming, Nada Yoga, chanting and meditation. Her Rhythmjuju Flow live music for yoga classes features Hebrew and Vedic chanting with flutes, world percussion and, if wanted, ambient electronics. She has played live for yoga teachers including Saul David Raye, Shiva Rae, Hala Khouri and Janet Stone. Her music has also appeared on Hala Khouri's yoga DVD, in Janet Stone's iPhone yoga app and in the films Bold Native and The Cellist. Saul David Raye, an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher, calls her "a wonderful teacher" who "has inspired many groups" on her website.
Worth Knowing
Marla Leigh is one of the few female professional frame drummers actively working today, and she brought that skill—along with flute and composition—into a deliberate intersection between world percussion and spiritual practice. She's serious about frame drumming as an instrument and tradition: she studied under Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Layne Redmond, and Randy Gloss at CalArts, pursuing both a BFA and MFA in percussion. But she's equally serious about the ceremonial and meditative dimensions of rhythm—she leads retreats at Esalen, Harbin, and Kalani, provides live percussion and flute for yoga classes grounded in Nada Yoga and Vedic chanting, and has played alongside teachers like Shiva Rea and Hala Khouri. Her debut album, Rhythms of Tof Miriam (2020), honors an ancient lineage of women frame drummers and was recorded in Israel. People follow her work because she holds both traditions—the technical mastery of world percussion and the spiritual intentionality of rhythm as a gateway to consciousness—without reducing either to cliché.
