The Secret of Communion:How Love Creates Connection

Deepak Chopra
Deepak Chopra
Oct 19, 2013
5 min de leitura

In this brief but concentrated meditation, Deepak Chopra examines communion—the state of being fully present with another being—as the secret source of lasting love and connection. Rather than treating love as an emotion to chase, he frames communion as the natural result of dropping barriers to presence and allowing consciousness itself to recognize itself in another. This teaching suggests that true intimacy arises not from attraction or chemistry alone, but from the willingness to dissolve the boundary between self and other.

What Is Communion in the Context of Love?

Communion, as Chopra presents it here, is not merely physical intimacy or emotional bonding. It is a state of consciousness where two beings meet in complete presence—where the sense of separation dissolves and awareness recognizes itself in the other. This is distinct from the romantic love narrative most people are taught, which emphasizes passion, compatibility, and emotional fireworks.

Instead, communion points toward something more stable and transformative: a recognition that the consciousness animating your body is the same consciousness animating your beloved's body. When two people enter genuine communion, they are not two separate entities seeking merger; they are already unified at the level of being itself. The relationship becomes a vehicle for this realization rather than a desperate search for completion.

How Does Presence Create Intimacy?

Chopra emphasizes the role of presence—the quality of attention and awareness brought to another person—as the gateway to communion. In most relationships, people are physically together but mentally elsewhere: lost in thought, defending against vulnerability, or performing a version of themselves. This fragmentation of consciousness prevents genuine communion from arising.

By contrast, when two people show up fully present—aware, undefended, genuinely interested in what the other is experiencing—the barrier between them becomes thin. Presence itself is the primary love language in this framework. It is not dependent on words, gestures, or physical acts, though these can naturally flow from presence. Presence alone is enough to dissolve the illusion of separateness.

This has practical implications: a partner who is truly present with you—not checking their phone, not rehearsing what they'll say next, not waiting for their turn to speak—is already giving you the deepest gift. Presence is communion made visible.

Why Does Love Often Miss Communion?

Most relationships operate on the level of personality, attraction, and transactional exchange. People fall in love with an image or an idea of another person. They pursue a relationship to fill a void, solve loneliness, or satisfy desire. These are not bad things, but they miss the deeper possibility that Chopra identifies.

When love is primarily based on what we can get—security, status, pleasure, validation—it remains conditional. It can evaporate when the other person changes, disappoints us, or when the initial chemistry fades. But when love arises from the recognition that the being before you is not separate from your own deepest nature, it becomes unconditional and durable.

Chopra's teaching suggests that the "secret" of communion is this reversal: not seeking to attract love from outside yourself, but recognizing the love that already exists as the ground of your own being—and then meeting another being in that recognition. This is why he frames it as "the secret of love": it's hidden not because it's obscure, but because it's overlooked while we're busy chasing its substitutes.

Can Communion Be Developed or Practiced?

While the track appears to be a guided meditation, the implication is that communion is not something you acquire through effort alone, but something you allow to emerge by removing obstacles. The practice, then, becomes one of releasing defenses, quieting the mind, and cultivating the capacity to be truly present with another.

Meditation itself—which forms the frame of this teaching—is a direct training in presence. When you meditate, you practice being with your experience without judgment, without the need to change it or escape it. This same quality of presence can be brought to another person. You can sit with them in silence, listening not just to their words but to the being beneath the words. You can practice allowing thoughts about them to settle, so that you meet them fresh rather than through the lens of memory, expectation, or narrative.

In this sense, the "secret" is not secret at all—it is available to anyone willing to show up more fully. It requires no special technique, only the choice to prioritize presence over performance, recognition over achievement.

Where Does This Teaching Fit in Chopra's Larger Work?

This meditation is part of "The Secret of Love: Meditations for Attracting and Being in Love," an album released in 2011. It reflects Chopra's consistent emphasis on consciousness as the fundamental reality underlying all experience. Just as his broader teachings point to the unified field of consciousness that connects all existence, this teaching on communion points to the same unity experienced in intimate relationship.

For Chopra, healing from loneliness, attracting genuine love, and sustaining healthy relationships all begin with a shift in consciousness—a movement from the idea that we are separate individuals competing for scarce love, to the realization that love is the nature of consciousness itself. Communion is love recognizing itself.

Where to Go From Here

If this teaching resonates, consider three directions for exploration. First, listen to the full meditation from the album and note what state of being it creates in you. Does it shift your sense of separateness? Second, practice this teaching in your own relationships by experimenting with moments of pure presence—put away distractions, quiet your mental commentary, and simply be with another person without agenda. Notice what becomes possible when you do. Third, deepen your meditation practice more generally, as it is the foundation for developing the quality of presence that communion requires. The transformation in love often follows a transformation in consciousness.

Communion, according to this teaching, is a state of complete presence where two beings recognize the same consciousness in each other, transcending the sense of separation. Romantic love is typically based on attraction, emotion, and personality compatibility. Communion is the deeper level of connection that can underpin love when two people meet in full awareness rather than through defensiveness or performance.
Communion emerges through the practice of genuine presence—being fully attentive without judgment, thought, or agenda. Start by removing distractions, quieting your mind, and meeting your partner in silence or simple conversation. Regular meditation strengthens your capacity for presence, which is the gateway to communion.
Yes. Communion is a meeting of consciousness, not dependent on physical or romantic attraction. While it can deepen romantic relationships, it is also possible between friends, family members, teachers and students, or any two beings willing to be genuinely present with each other.
Most relationships operate at the level of personality, transactional exchange, and getting needs met rather than mutual recognition. When love is based primarily on what you can extract from the relationship, it remains conditional and fragile. Communion offers a more stable foundation because it arises from recognizing unity rather than seeking completion.
No. Communion is the opposite—it is not merging your identity into another, but recognizing that your deepest identity is already shared. You remain fully yourself while simultaneously recognizing that the separation between you and the other person is illusory at the level of consciousness.
Communion is possible with anyone because it is not about liking their personality—it is about recognizing the consciousness animating their being. However, personal relationships thrive when there is both communion and genuine affection, so this would more likely apply to encounters with strangers or challenging people.
