Fanna-Fi-Allah is a Sufi Qawwali ensemble that has carried traditional qawwali to audiences around the world for over two decades. Qawwali is a devotional art form in which the fire of divine love (ishq) is expressed through the mystical verses of Sufi poets, sung in Urdu, Farsi, Hindi and Punjabi. The group sings with a soaring chorus, the rhythms of tabla and group clapping, and a spirit of ecstatic devotion. They describe their work as a bridge between East and West, carrying a message of universal tolerance.
The ensemble is led by Tahir Hussain Faridi Qawwal, who sings lead vocal and plays harmonium, and who manages the group. He has studied under Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Pandit Pashupatinath Mishra, Ustad Sher Ali Khan and Ustad Muazzam Ali Khan, and he teaches vocal music and harmonium within the traditional raaga system when he is not on tour. The current lineup includes Kash Qalandar on tabla and vocals, Laali Qalandar (a key member since 2001), Salim Chishty, Ali Shan and Abrar Hussain on vocals and clapping, and Chetan Ramlu on harmonium and vocals. Aziz Abbatiello joins them as a whirling dervish.
Fanna-Fi-Allah have played qawwali in its traditional setting at the tombs of Sufi saints in Pakistan and India. These include the shrines of Data Ganj Baksh in Lahore, Baba Ganj-e-Shakar in Pak Pattan, and Khwaja Nizzam-Ud-Deen Aulia and Amir Khusrau in Delhi, as well as Khwaja Mueen-Ud-Deen Chishty in Ajmer. They have also performed at festivals and concert stages across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.
They have published over ten albums, on labels including Tabaruq Records and Buda Musique (France). They also made the award-winning documentary Music of the Mystics, a closer look at Sufi culture and the beauty of qawwali.
Worth Knowing
Fanna-Fi-Allah is a Canadian-American Sufi Qawwali ensemble that has spent over two decades transmitting the most intimate devotional music tradition of South Asia—qawwali—to audiences worldwide who have little to no access to it otherwise. Led by vocalist and harmonium player Tahir Hussain Faridi Qawwal, the group is recognized for maintaining qawwali's authentic spiritual practices while adapting its presentation for concert and festival stages across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Qawwali itself is a centuries-old art form centered on the mystical ecstasy of divine love (ishq), expressed through the poetry of great Sufi saints sung in Urdu, Farsi, Hindi, and Punjabi—a tradition that was historically performed only in the sacred tombs and shrines of Muslim saints. What draws listeners to Fanna-Fi-Allah is both the raw power of the vocalists' soaring harmonies and the ensemble's commitment to a bridge-building mission: they present qawwali not as a museum piece but as a living tradition that speaks to universal spiritual hunger, regardless of background. Their work matters because qawwali itself is in decline in its home regions, making ensembles like this one essential carriers of a complex, demanding, and beautiful practice.
