Estas Tonne is a guitarist and musician who describes himself as a "modern-day troubadour." Born Stanislav Tonne in 1975 in the Ukrainian SSR, he took up the guitar at eight and began studying classical music at a local music school. After his family moved to Israel in 1990 he stopped playing for eleven years, then moved to New York City in September 2001 and began playing again in a duo with violinist and street musician Michael Shulman. He later began travelling as a solo musician and has performed around the world, at street, yoga and art festivals among other settings.
His official site describes music rooted in authenticity and self-renewal, exploring the individuality of sound and how a sounding source can open a creative space for the listener, for wellbeing and for a shift. His YouTube channel puts it this way: music "is not about notes, chords or songs but the breath of life that goes through everything, each and every one."
The music is largely spontaneous and improvised. His album Old Style was recorded in a single take in the studio, with no loops or samples. His discography includes Internal Flight (2013), Mother of Souls (2016) and Anthology, Vol. III (Acoustic) (2023), alongside live recordings such as Sound Ceremony, recorded in Zurich in spring 2024. He has also released music with Sanya Kroitor and has collaborated with musicians including Michael Shrieve.
Out of this work grew the Internal Flight Experience, a three-hour session that began as an inner sound journey. After more than a decade of experimenting, it became a fuller practice that brings together sound, spontaneous movement, vocalised release, breath awareness and silence. Its aim is to help participants let go of physical and mental tension and listen inward.
Worth Knowing
Estas Tonne is a guitarist who calls himself a “modern-day troubadour,” born Stanislav Tonne in 1975 in the Ukrainian SSR according to the official biography. He started guitar at eight and studied classical music at a local music school before the family moved to Israel in 1990, then stopped playing for eleven years. He resumed in New York City in September 2001 in a duo with violinist and street musician Michael Shulman, and later began touring solo across street, yoga and art festivals. Listeners tend to seek out the improvisation: the music is largely spontaneous, and the album Old Style was recorded in a single studio take with no loops or samples, which is unusual for recordings in the sound-healing space. His Spotify following is modest, at about 6,481 listeners, so most of his audience arrived through live sessions and word of mouth. The full arc is laid out in our piece “Who Is Estas Tonne? Life, Work, and Legacy.”
