Dharma Treasure Retreat Center — Cochise, United States
A small Buddhist retreat community in Arizona's Dragoon Mountains, birthplace of The Mind Illuminated
Dharma Treasure Retreat Center, also known as Stronghold Retreat, was founded as a small Buddhist community in 2019 on the family homestead of the late teacher Upasaka Culadasa. It stands at the base of the Dragoon Mountains in southeast Arizona, and the center describes itself as the birthplace of The Mind Illuminated (TMI) method. Its own pages say the canyon was held sacred first by the Chiricahua Apaches and later by hundreds of meditators grateful for the quiet.
The property covers five secluded acres high in Cochise Stronghold Canyon, at 5,000 feet, bordered by the Coronado National Forest. The center sits within 58,000 acres of forest land with more than 22 miles of hiking and climbing trails, and the absence of light pollution makes for dark skies. Its high desert oak woodland is home to javelina, bobcat, mountain lion, coatimundi and Montezuma quail.
Buddhist meditation is the backbone of the practice, though meditators from every tradition, or none, are welcome. Solo retreatants stay a minimum of three nights, build their own daily schedule around at least six hours of sitting and walking practice, and meet with the resident teacher. Noble silence is encouraged. Group retreats on the calendar include a Brahmavihara retreat, a week drawing on Zen, Dzogchen and Mahamudra, and a two-week program built on Har-Prakash's Cultivating the Jewel of Mindfulness training. A dark retreat offering, for experienced practitioners only, begins in 2026.
Lodging ranges from rooms in a strawbale eco-house and a small meditation hut called the Kuti to a shared yurt dubbed the Dharmatory, bell tents and camping. Guests are asked for about an hour of daily work service, and volunteers can stay two to six weeks on a work retreat. A resident yogi, Henrik Norberg, who trained with Culadasa at the center, offers guidance. Monthly full moon hikes honor Uposatha days in the Theravada tradition.
