Kristina Olsen is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who divides her time between Venice, California and Vancouver, BC. She plays acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, concertina, banjo, mandolin and piano. Her big bluesy voice carries songs that range from sassy bottleneck blues to lilting ballads, swing jazz and what she calls raunch and roll, and her storytelling is known for its humor.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s, she describes her approach to music and life as shaped by that setting of cultural expression, social activism and varied musical influences. She won the New Folk contest at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1985. Her Kerrville songwriting award is also credited to "I'm Keeping This Life of Mine," a song for battered women.
Olsen has released thirteen recordings, four of them on Philo/Rounder, along with a live DVD and an enhanced eBook with music, They Paid Us in Tub Time. She has toured with Jez Lowe and James Keelaghan, made an album of co-writes with jazz guitarist Bill Coon, and long collaborated with Australian cellist Peter Grayling. Her songs have been recorded by Eric Bibb, Fairport Convention, Maddy Prior, Mary Coughlan and Mollie O'Brien. She played hammered dulcimer on Michelle Shocked's Short Sharp Shocked, toured as Mary Coughlan's guitarist in 2005, and has performed in plays at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
A touring musician for much of the year, she regularly plays in Australia, Scotland, England, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, and has given concerts in Bangladesh, Norfolk Island and New Caledonia. She once rode a snowmobile-drawn sled across a frozen lake to a concert in Aleknagik, Alaska.
Olsen has taught songwriting, slide guitar, other guitar classes and dance for musicians at adult music camps for over twenty years. She writes for Acoustic Guitar magazine on guitar and performance technique, and she graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2020 with a dual major in guitar and orchestration/arranging. She is now arranging choral versions of her songs so that local choirs can join her on stage.
Worth Knowing
Kristina Olsen is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was born in San Francisco, grew up in Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s, and now divides her time between Venice, California and Vancouver, BC. Listeners are drawn to her big, bluesy voice, which carries material that runs from sassy bottleneck blues and lilting ballads to swing jazz and what she calls raunch and roll. She plays acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, concertina, banjo, mandolin and piano, so her arrangements shift with each song rather than following one template. Her storytelling is the feature most listeners mention first, because the humor is frequently the way she sets up a serious lyric. Her 1985 New Folk win at the Kerrville Folk Festival marks an early milestone, and she has performed steadily since then in Australia, Scotland, England, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. The main caveat is that she is a working performer with a warm, earthy, sometimes bawdy stage manner, so newcomers expecting a hushed or meditative presence will hear something looser and more direct.
