A Poet Who Writes on Request

Jacqueline Suskin is a poet, educator, and author whose work rests on a simple, disarming premise: that poetry belongs to everyone, and that it can be made in the moment, for a particular person, about whatever matters to them. Since 2009 she has taught workshops, written books, led retreats, and composed spontaneous poems for strangers around the world. Her practice has earned coverage in outlets including the New York Times, T Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and The Atlantic, but its real center is the quiet exchange between one writer and one person who has asked for a poem.

The Poem Store

Suskin is best known for Poem Store, a project in which patrons choose a topic and receive a unique, improvised poem in exchange. The format is plain. Someone names a subject, which might be a grief, a pet, a wedding, a season, or a private worry, and Suskin writes a poem on the spot. There is no template and no revision at a later desk. The poem arrives as a direct response to what was offered.

By her own account she has composed over forty thousand of these poems. That number matters less as a statistic than as evidence of a discipline. Writing at that volume, in real time, for people she has just met, requires a particular kind of attention: listening closely, trusting instinct, and accepting that a poem can be useful and true without being polished for posterity. It also reframes what a poet does. Rather than withdrawing to write alone, Suskin sits in public and makes the act of writing a form of hospitality.

Books and Published Work

Suskin is the author of nine books, issued by a varied group of publishers: Publication Studio, Ten Speed Press, Rare Bird, Write Bloody, Sounds True, and Flower Press. That range suggests a writer who moves comfortably between small independent presses and larger imprints, and between poetry collections and more practice-oriented books.

Among her titles are Every Day Is a Poem, A Year in Practice, and The Verse for Now. The first two point toward her interest in poetry as a habit, something returned to daily rather than saved for inspiration. The Verse for Now speaks to a related preoccupation: finding language adequate to the present moment.

Her collection Help in the Dark Season takes on love as a path that begins in the dark, grows, breaks, and transforms us. It holds that human connection is always worth the risk. The book's premise echoes the logic of the Poem Store, in which a stranger's openness is met with an equally open response.

Teaching and Retreats

Education is not a side project for Suskin; it runs through everything she does. She has taught workshops since 2009, and her teaching tends to emphasize accessibility and practice. The aim is less to produce perfect verse than to help people develop a relationship with writing, observation, and their own voices.

From 2019 to 2021 she served as Artist in Residence at Folklife Farm. During that time she founded a retreat program, and she continues to host artists there from around the world. Retreats extend her workshop approach into a more immersive setting, giving participants time, land, and community in which to write. The residency also reflects her long engagement with the natural world as both subject and teacher.

The Current Chapter: Detroit and the Poem Forest

Suskin lives in Detroit, where she brings nature poetry into urban classrooms through her Poem Forest curriculum. The project joins two ideas that can seem at odds: that city students are distant from nature, and that nature poetry is something for rural or leisurely settings. Her curriculum treats the natural world as available to everyone, in trees, weather, birds, and the small details of a neighborhood, and treats poetry as a way of noticing them.

This work in classrooms carries forward the instincts of the Poem Store. Students are invited to respond to what is in front of them, to write without waiting for permission, and to see themselves as people who can make language. Alongside her retreat hosting and ongoing writing, it represents a chapter in which her practice is becoming more rooted in a single community while still reaching outward.

Why She Matters

Suskin's significance lies in the audience she reaches and the assumptions she quietly challenges. Poetry is often framed as difficult, elite, or remote from daily life. Her work insists otherwise. People who might never pick up a poetry collection encounter her at a table, ask for a poem about something personal, and walk away with words made only for them. Students in Detroit classrooms meet poetry as an active, present-tense skill. Artists who come to retreats find structure and encouragement for their own work.

Her approach also offers a model of sustained creative commitment. Forty thousand improvised poems, nine books, and more than a decade and a half of teaching amount to a body of work built through repetition, generosity, and trust in the moment. It is a vision of the artist as someone in service to attention: to people, to place, and to the language that rises when both are taken seriously.

For readers and audiences alike, Jacqueline Suskin's legacy is already visible in the many small, private moments when someone received a poem and felt seen. It is an unusual measure of an artist's impact, and perhaps a fitting one for a poet who has made connection her central subject.
