Question 1

Who is Erica de Leeuw, and why do people care about her work?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw is a Dutch yoga teacher, meditation guide, and massage therapist based in the eastern Netherlands who has built a quiet but devoted following by refusing to separate these three practices—they're woven together around a single principle: helping people find vitality and inner strength without strain or performance. Her approach to Hatha yoga is distinctly relaxed and conversational; students remark that her classes work through the body, breath, and mind in sequences that build strength but never demand flexibility like a gymnast, making them accessible whether someone is supple or genuinely rigid. Beyond the mat, she records guided meditation audio courses, some specifically designed for women navigating menopause, that listeners describe as grounding and genuinely present—not ethereal or distant. Her massage practice, rooted in techniques like psoas release, treats the body as interconnected with emotional and mental states. What sets Erica apart in a crowded wellness landscape is her consistency: she teaches regularly for Yogaclub Overasselt in Overasselt and maintains a massage base in Malden, building real depth rather than chasing scale or social reach.

Question 2

What tradition or lineage does Erica de Leeuw's work belong to?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw teaches within the Hatha yoga tradition—the classical lineage that emphasizes the marriage of breath, physical posture, and mental clarity rather than speed, intensity, or aesthetic perfection. Hatha, as a tradition, predates the modern "yoga fitness" era by centuries; it's the lineage that treats the body as an instrument for accessing steadiness and clarity of mind. Her specific teaching style draws from that tradition's emphasis on sustainable practice—working at your own level, respecting your own structure, building strength through presence rather than ambition. The meditation courses she records align with classical yoga's understanding of meditation (dhyana) as a natural progression from physical and breathing practice; the mind settles when the body and breath settle first. Her massage work, particularly her focus on psoas release, connects to the yoga anatomy that understands the psoas—the deep hip flexor—as a repository for held tension and trauma, a somatic understanding that bridges traditional yoga and contemporary body-centered therapy. Within Dutch wellness culture, she represents a lineage of practitioners who treat yoga and massage not as lifestyle commodities but as genuine healing practices.

Question 3

Where should a complete newcomer start with Erica de Leeuw's work?

Accepted Answer

A newcomer should start with her Hatha yoga classes in Overasselt, offered through Yogaclub Overasselt, which are explicitly designed for mixed abilities and state that students need not be supple or experienced to join—this is where you'll experience her teaching voice and her philosophy of building vitality without strain. If attending classes in person isn't feasible, her recorded guided meditation audio courses are the next entry point; these reveal how she works with breath and presence without the physical demands of a yoga class. For those who want deeper work on the nervous system or accumulated physical tension, a single psoas release massage session (she's based in Malden) is illuminating—it demonstrates her understanding of how the body holds stress and how somatic awareness can unlock both relaxation and mental clarity. Newcomers often benefit from starting with one modality rather than trying all three at once; her website at ericadeleeuw.nl will have current information on class schedules and availability. The most important thing to know: her classes and sessions are not performative; they're built around who you actually are and what you actually need in this moment.

Question 4

What makes Erica de Leeuw distinctive compared to other yoga teachers?

Accepted Answer

Most yoga teachers specialize: they teach classes, or they're primarily known as meditation teachers, or they've built a retreat or studio brand. Erica de Leeuw's distinctiveness lies in her refusal to fragment these practices—her Hatha yoga classes explicitly work through body, breath, and mind in concert; her meditation recordings emerge from the same philosophy; her massage practice treats the psoas and other holding patterns as the "unresolved chapters" that yoga and meditation alone cannot rewrite. She also teaches individual breath work sessions (pranayama), which is rare among generalist yoga teachers; this signals someone who understands breathing as its own deep practice rather than a warm-up. There's an intentional restraint to her work: she teaches in one region (Malden and Overasselt in the eastern Netherlands), she's not building an international brand or product line, which means students work with consistent teaching, consistent presence, and consistent depth. What students repeatedly mention is that her classes feel "attentive to everyone's abilities"—this isn't just kind language; it means she's not teaching to the Instagram-perfect alignment but to the nervous system, the breath, the actual person on the mat. In a field crowded with boutique yoga brands and celebrity teachers, Erica represents an older lineage: the local, deeply committed practitioner.

Question 5

Who is Erica de Leeuw's work NOT for?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw's work is not for people seeking high-intensity, performance-based fitness—her Hatha yoga is deliberately relaxed and sustainable, not building toward handstands or extreme flexibility or ego-satisfying "achievement." Her classes won't appeal to students who need mirroring or personality-driven teaching; she's serious and grounded, not charismatic in a performer sense. Anyone looking for a trendy, packaged "wellness journey" or a teacher with a large social media presence should look elsewhere; she teaches locally through Yogaclub Overasselt, and her presence is intentionally unglamorous. For those seeking quick fixes, her work won't land either—the philosophy is "living from your inner strength, in balance with yourself and the world," which implies slow, patient cultivation rather than overnight transformation. Her meditation courses and massage work are equally patient; if you want breathless excitement or dramatic emotional catharsis, this isn't the practice. Additionally, if you're physically unable to attend classes in Overasselt or arrange sessions in Malden, access to her work is limited to recorded meditation audio. That selectivity is exactly what attracts serious practitioners—people who want depth over breadth.

Question 6

How can I follow Erica de Leeuw's upcoming events, releases, and travel?

Accepted Answer

The primary resource is Erica de Leeuw's website at ericadeleeuw.nl, which will have current information on Hatha yoga class schedules in Overasselt (offered through Yogaclub Overasselt), availability for massage sessions in Malden, and any new meditation audio course releases. Yogaclub Overasselt's schedule will also reflect her teaching times and any special workshops or breath work sessions she offers. For those interested in her recorded meditation work, she has a presence on Spotify (with over 5,900 followers), which suggests her audio courses are available through that platform and potentially other podcast or meditation apps. Because Erica teaches locally and doesn't maintain a conventional touring schedule or travel-based retreats, the relationship is with a place-based teacher rather than an itinerant one—you either visit her in the eastern Netherlands or engage with her recorded meditations. Her website is the hub; checking it directly or calling to inquire about her current availability and any seasonal offerings is the most reliable method. Unlike teachers with manager-coordinated schedules, Erica's availability reflects her local teaching commitments, so direct inquiry through her website contact is recommended.

Question 7

Where can I see Erica de Leeuw live?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw teaches regular Hatha yoga classes in Overasselt, offered under the umbrella of Yogaclub Overasselt, which serves as the home base for her yoga instruction. Her massage practice is based in Malden, so in-person sessions there are available by appointment. These are not itinerant teaching arrangements; she's based in the eastern Netherlands and teaches locally rather than touring to retreats or international venues. For her Hatha yoga classes specifically, Overasselt is where to go; the classes are described as varied and attentive to different ability levels, and they work through body, breath, and mind in her characteristic relaxed, sustainable style. For those seeking a retreat setting or intensive workshop, there's no current data suggesting she regularly offers those; her model is consistent local teaching rather than event-based work. Anyone hoping to study with her directly should plan to either visit the eastern Netherlands or, if that's not possible, explore her guided meditation audio courses, which represent her teaching voice and meditative philosophy in recorded form. The most current information on class times and availability can be found at ericadeleeuw.nl or through Yogaclub Overasselt's schedule.

Question 8

What are the core practices Erica de Leeuw emphasizes?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw's work centers on four interconnected practices: Hatha yoga, meditation, massage (with a specialty in psoas release), and breath work. Her Hatha yoga classes are her primary public offering—they build vitality through physical postures (asanas) coordinated with breath, building a felt sense of your own body and a quieting of the constant mental chatter. The meditation recordings she produces are guided audio courses that support inward movement toward stillness and insight; notably, she's created a specialized course for women moving through menopause, which reflects her understanding that meditation can address specific life transitions rather than just generic "stress relief." Psoas release massage is her third pillar—the psoas, the deep hip flexor that accumulates trauma and stress, and her approach treats this release as both a somatic and emotional healing practice. Finally, she offers individual breath work sessions, indicating her understanding of pranayama as a distinct practice worthy of focused study beyond its role in yoga classes. The philosophy threading through all four is the same: building vitality and presence while staying in balance with yourself and the world, without strain or performance.

Question 9

What makes Erica de Leeuw's approach to Hatha yoga different?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw's Hatha yoga is defined by three characteristics: it's taught in a deliberately relaxed manner, it's designed to meet students where they are (supple or not), and it treats breath and mind as inseparable from physical movement. She's not teaching yoga as a pathway to perfect alignment or to Instagram-worthy aesthetics; she's teaching it as described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika tradition—a preparation for meditation, a method for calming the nervous system, and a way to build sustainable strength and presence. Students repeatedly note that her classes are "varied and attentive to everyone's abilities," which suggests she's teaching to a room of real humans with different histories, injuries, and capacities rather than a hypothetical ideal body. Her attention to individual breath work (she offers sessions in this separately) indicates she understands pranayama not as a 5-minute warm-up but as a practice of equal standing to physical postures. The phrase "building vitality while staying present in the here and now, with lightness and enjoyment" is key—there's an absence of grim striving, an absence of the "push harder" ethos that defines much Western fitness yoga. This makes her classes appropriate for people seeking genuine depth and healing rather than athletic achievement or aesthetic transformation.

Question 10

Why do people use Erica de Leeuw's meditation audio courses?

Accepted Answer

Erica de Leeuw records guided meditation audio courses that listeners describe as grounding and genuinely present—meaning her voice and guidance don't pull toward escapism or spiritual bypassing but toward actual contact with stillness and insight within ordinary experience. One of her courses is specifically designed for women going through menopause, which suggests she understands that meditation can be tailored to particular life circumstances and embodied experiences, not just generic "relax your mind." Her meditation recordings represent an extension of her Hatha yoga philosophy: the mind settles when the body and breath are stable, so her guidance likely emphasizes breath awareness and somatic grounding before moving toward deeper stillness. With over 5,900 followers on Spotify, her recordings have found an audience, which suggests they're accessible to people who can't attend her live classes in Overasselt or who live outside the eastern Netherlands. The menopause-specific course is particularly notable—it indicates she's willing to address embodied, generational, and gender-specific experiences that many generic meditation apps avoid. For listeners seeking meditation guidance that emerges from a grounded yoga tradition rather than a generic wellness framework, her recorded courses offer that anchor.
