DJ Drez, also known as Drez Selecta and Dr. EZ, is a producer, musical director and sound ambassador from Los Angeles. Rooted in underground L.A. hip hop, he brings precise turntable skills to a vision of truly universal music, weaving hip hop, world music, soul, funk, jazz and reggae into his trademark sound.
He cuts and composes original tracks made to support body movement practice of every kind, whether dance, yoga asana or after-hours intimate and ecstatic settings. His work moves from the hip hop of his younger days to the jazz of the Moon Bay Sessions, the Eastern influences of the Jahta Beat series, and more recent electronic exploration, with reggae always present. His remix and dub of Gregory Isaacs' "If I Don't Have You" shows the same ease in blending reggae warmth with downtempo calm.
Drez makes mantra music with his wife, vocalist Marti Nikko. Their album Dreaming in Sanskrit, followed by Dreaming in Sanskrit 2, sets ancient Sanskrit mantras and the Holy Names over dub-heavy, experimental electronic production. Reviewer John Smrtic described the second album as a "sublime soundtrack for the awakening of our consciousness." Drez and Nikko are also Wellness Ambassadors for Rock Om®, the in-room yoga program from Hard Rock Hotels.
His résumé includes work with artists such as Blackstar, KRS-One, Black Eyed Peas, Macy Gray, Eminem and Project Blowed, and with organizations including Adidas, X Games, ABC and Okayplayer. He has toured worldwide with artists including Moby, Ziggy Marley, Common, Femi Kuti, De La Soul, Capleton, Nas and Lee Scratch Perry.
He describes himself as peacefully determined, a student always and sometimes a teacher, a yogi, father and husband, and "wildly calm."
