Christel Veraart is a composer, singer, lyricist, author and filmmaker whose music and visual work move across genres and cultures. Originally from the Netherlands, she is now based in Sedona, Arizona, where the ancient stones and star-filled skies inform her work. Her travels, from Argentina to Indonesia and Hawaii to Alaska, give it a sense of place, mystery and emotion. Her music has been described as ambient, meditative, avant-garde classical, and her compositions range from solo and small ensemble to large orchestra.
She composes for film, dance and stage and has released more than ten albums and numerous singles. Among them are Polar Suite, Lotus Dreams, Pleiades, Nostalgia and Sacred Arias. Pleiades was named Best Ambient Album of the Year in 2020. Her music has been broadcast on the US radio programs Hearts of Space and Night Tides, and she has also composed music and sound design for a Google Doodle.
Her studies include orchestration at Berklee School of Music in Boston, classical voice, and classical piano at conservatories in Maastricht and Buenos Aires. Argentina has had a lasting influence on her life and art. It inspired her debut book, Santa Fe & Esmeralda, and the film series adapted from it. Santa Fe & Esmeralda – CrossRoads, her directorial debut, won Best Story at the Toronto LGBTQ+ Film Festival in 2024.
Christel serves as creative partner and composer in residence with Sedona Ballet. With Ballet Arizona choreographer Nayon Iovino, she premiered music from her album Nostalgia in a new ballet at the inaugural Sedona Choreography Retreat. She describes her music as reflecting the beauty and challenges of places both real and imagined.
Worth Knowing
Christel Veraart is a Sedona, Arizona-based composer, singer, lyricist, author and filmmaker from the Netherlands, and her profile also lists her as a meditation teacher. Her work stands out because it moves across media instead of staying in one lane, with more than ten albums and numerous singles alongside film scoring, dance and stage composition, sound design for a Google Doodle, and a directorial debut. Her bio ties the music to place, citing the ancient stones and star-filled skies around Sedona and travels through Argentina, Indonesia, Hawaii and Alaska. The Argentina-rooted records and the Latin-titled sacred singles give her ambient and meditative catalogue a clearer sense of geography and text than most music in those categories. The record documents her recordings and stage work in detail, but it does not describe a series of recorded talks or teaching programs, so the teaching credential is harder to assess than the music. Her bio notes that Pleiades was named Best Ambient Album of the Year in 2020, which is the closest thing to a headline honor in the record.
