[0:01] Um,
[0:05] as you probably know, this is a a hymn
[0:07] to Hanuman.
[0:09] And
[0:10] on the very basic level, what it does is
[0:14] describe
[0:16] many of his qualities
[0:19] uh and many of the events that happened
[0:23] in uh in the Ramayana with Rah and the
[0:26] war against the uh the demons against
[0:29] Raana Rab and his armies.
[0:33] Ravena represents the ego. He has 10
[0:36] heads which represent the five senses
[0:39] and the objects
[0:41] and the ego kidnaps
[0:45] the shakti
[0:48] because it wants to be it wants the
[0:50] shakti but the funny thing is in the
[0:53] story
[0:55] raa can't actually
[0:58] uh how to say it
[1:01] get it on with shakti
[1:04] because unless Unless the shakti agrees
[1:06] to it, Ravena's head will explode in a
[1:10] thousand pieces. And of course, Sitha
[1:13] would never agree
[1:15] to uh
[1:18] getting it on with anybody except Rah.
[1:21] And it's a very subtle story. In fact,
[1:24] Sitha, it's not even Sitha who's
[1:26] kidnapped.
[1:28] It's a a heavenly absara, one of the
[1:32] heavenly goddesses who was cursed
[1:35] by Indra. So she had to take a birth.
[1:39] She had to incarnate on earth and so she
[1:41] switched out with Sitha.
[1:45] It's a really cool story. Most people
[1:47] say, "Oh, how could Rahm teach treat
[1:49] sitta that way?"
[1:52] Give yourself a break. Don't get
[1:54] involved with that. It's not like that
[1:56] at all. In fact, like I said, Sitta
[1:59] actually is not kidnapped. She just goes
[2:01] into her subt a subtle form and this
[2:04] other being is kidnapped.
[2:07] And um
[2:12] anyhow, so Rah is wandering around
[2:16] for lawn and brokenhearted. He can't
[2:18] find Sitta. Has no clue where she might
[2:21] be. And in the forest, he meets this
[2:25] monkey
[2:26] who shows up and introduces himself.
[2:32] And at that point, Hanuman is the
[2:35] ambassador of the king of monkeys.
[2:39] And he greets Rama. And he he uh
[2:45] because of this an alliance is made
[2:47] between Rama and the monkeys.
[2:51] And all the monkeys go out in search of
[2:53] Sitha and
[2:55] uh they can't find her and there's only
[2:57] one place left on the earth where they
[3:00] haven't looked where they haven't been
[3:02] able to look and that's the island of
[3:04] Lanka which is now called son and
[3:06] actually now it's called Lanca again
[3:10] and so finally Hanuman jumps over the
[3:12] ocean and finds Sitha
[3:16] and then comes back and tells Ram where
[3:18] she is and then there's a big battle
[3:21] and the demons, the negative forces are
[3:24] destroyed.
[3:31] All this there's a a macrocosm and
[3:33] there's a microcosm. All this exists
[3:35] within the body within the human
[3:38] incarnation as well. Hanuman in Ayurveda
[3:42] Hanuman is considered the prana in the
[3:45] body
[3:47] and he's con he's called the son of the
[3:50] wind the wind god
[3:53] and the wind and prana is the energy in
[3:56] the body
[3:58] and uh that energy is supposed to flow
[4:02] through the 84,000
[4:05] nadis or channels in the body but many
[4:08] of those channels are blocked by our
[4:11] emotional
[4:12] stuff and all kinds of stuff.
[4:27] Maharaji said chanting the hanuman
[4:29] chalisa can change fate
[4:35] can change karma
[4:38] can free us of negative karmas.
[4:41] And the way I think about it now after a
[4:44] lot of years of thinking about it
[4:47] is that our emotional stuff is
[4:52] stored in our uh in a subtle body in the
[4:55] nadis and hanuman as the prana
[5:01] can clear out those channels.
[5:05] So for instance, you know, all our
[5:08] all our stuff, our programming is pretty
[5:10] much in our subtle body. All our em
[5:12] emotional traumas, our likes, our
[5:14] dislikes,
[5:16] a lot of karmas are are stored there.
[5:20] And so through through invoking the
[5:22] presence of Hanuman which is prana in
[5:26] the body as well those emotional that
[5:29] emotional stuff is wiped out is washed
[5:31] away opened up and it frees us from a
[5:36] lot of the uh
[5:41] the stuff that we do
[5:43] with no vote because we have no vote.
[5:46] our our likes and dislikes, our
[5:49] emotional triggers and all that stuff.
[5:53] So,
[6:00] so it's a it's a long hymn. It's very
[6:02] difficult to learn it. Uh you don't have
[6:04] to to memorize it. You can read it. You
[6:08] can chant it with or without music. It
[6:11] doesn't have to have music.
[6:13] But when you do this practice,
[6:17] you should definitely
[6:19] feel that you are offering each line to
[6:24] Hanuman, to Maharaji.
[6:27] And that almost like a piece of fruit,
[6:29] like an offering. Each line, every word,
[6:32] every line is a way of connecting with
[6:37] with that
[6:43] atma shaki with the with the energy of
[6:46] your own soul.
[6:53] Every line Maharaji said every line of
[6:55] Hanamanisa is Mahamantra
[6:58] is the name. Mahamantra means the name.
[7:02] All the names are Mahamantra.
[7:06] Period.
[7:09] And uh so all these this whole practice
[7:12] is is the repetition of the name as
[7:14] well. And you know what he said about
[7:17] the name through the repetition of the
[7:19] name everything is accomplished.
[7:23] Yes. That too that too that too
[7:28] everything is accomplished.
[7:32] So, and and and
[7:35] there's a a direct
[7:38] correlation between how difficult a
[7:39] practices and how much benefit you get
[7:42] from doing it.
[7:45] Right? You would figure it would have to
[7:49] be that way. Like the longer mantras, if
[7:53] you do 108 Har Krishna mantras, that
[7:55] takes a while. If you do 108 Rams, you
[7:57] can do it in about a second and a half.
[8:01] I remember being in India and these
[8:02] sadhus come up goam
[8:06] give me money give me money give me
[8:08] money money money money money money
[8:08] money money money money money money
[8:08] money money money money money money
[8:08] money money money you know like that
[8:10] doesn't really work but 100 108 guy
[8:15] mantras or 108 mantras with a lot of
[8:17] words that takes and so it generates
[8:21] more shakti as well it generates more
[8:25] movement into your own heart so to speak
[8:28] So,
[8:30] do you have the words somewhere? Do you
[8:32] all have the words? Okay, we're we're
[8:36] not going to sing 11 chilis because
[8:38] we're not going to. We'll sing a few and
[8:41] then we'll talk a little bit, then we'll
[8:43] sing a few more. Okay.

[22:27] [Music]
[22:48] So
[22:50] there we were in India,
[22:53] fresh out of New York
[22:57] and
[22:59] we we didn't know what to do.
[23:03] We recognized that there were certainly
[23:05] a lot of cultural
[23:08] stuff that we were just completely
[23:10] unaware of.
[23:13] And more than that, we wanted to get
[23:16] closer to Maharaji. We wanted to feel
[23:19] closer and spend more time with him.
[23:23] And uh but in the early days, he would
[23:27] see us one day and say, "Okay, come back
[23:29] in a week."
[23:31] a week, you know, and what do we have?
[23:34] Nothing to do. Back in Nanita, I'll walk
[23:36] around, get depressed,
[23:38] smoke some dope, you know, not much to
[23:41] do.
[23:43] But, um, so one day, uh, where's Romesh?
[23:48] Is he here? No, he's asleep.
[23:50] >> He's right there.
[23:51] >> Oh, you're awake. We came to the temple
[23:53] one day. Every time we came to the
[23:56] temple, they handed us a little a little
[23:59] booklet, yellow booklet with a picture
[24:01] of a flying monkey on it. I had about a
[24:05] hundred of them in my room.
[24:08] And finally one day
[24:11] the light went on and I said, "Hey, what
[24:14] is this?"
[24:16] You think, you know. So the guy said,
[24:19] "Well, it's a it's a hymn to Hanuman."
[24:22] Oh,
[24:24] so
[24:26] we decided we would try to learn it
[24:30] because we knew that if we learned it,
[24:32] we could sing it to Maharaji and we knew
[24:35] that he secretly wanted to spend more
[24:37] time with the westerners,
[24:40] but he was having trouble arranging it.
[24:42] So, we just thought we'd try to help
[24:44] him.
[24:47] And as it turned out, due to Ramdas's um
[24:53] I don't quite know how to say this.
[24:58] Uh
[24:59] let's let me think about it for a
[25:01] second.
[25:03] Let's let let's be compassionate and say
[25:05] Ramdas's desire to become enlightened
[25:08] faster than the speed of light.
[25:12] We had arranged he had arranged for one
[25:14] of our Buddhist meditation teachers to
[25:16] come spend the whole rainy season with
[25:18] us way further up in the mountains
[25:22] uh in a town called Kosani. And the idea
[25:25] was that three or four of us or five of
[25:27] us were going to and Ramdas were going
[25:30] to live in this house together with this
[25:32] guy and wham bam thank you ma'am we were
[25:35] going to get enlightened.
[25:38] So
[25:40] what happened was we got up there and
[25:43] then we get a letter from our Buddhist
[25:45] meditation teacher saying sorry can't
[25:47] make it.
[25:49] >> Mother is sick.
[25:51] >> Huh?
[25:52] >> Mother is sick.
[25:53] >> Yeah. His mother was sick so he couldn't
[25:54] make it.
[25:57] >> So there we were 5 hours away from
[26:01] Maharaji
[26:03] for the whole rainy season. And if you
[26:06] think about it he just transferred us.
[26:08] He just said out move and he moved all
[26:11] the western and then all the westerners
[26:13] that came to the temple he'd send up go
[26:15] be with Ramdas.
[26:17] So Ramdas had to actually move out of
[26:20] our house and move across the valley the
[26:23] little valley into another place where
[26:25] all these other westerners came and it
[26:27] was like uh Ramdas became the baba of
[26:30] another little ashram up there
[26:33] but we were together in this other
[26:36] little house. So we we learned the Hindi
[26:38] alphabet. We didn't know it. And then we
[26:41] went through this chilisa letter by
[26:43] letter and wrote it out. It took about
[26:46] what 3 months, huh? What? We're still
[26:49] counting, you know. And then uh and then
[26:52] this this guy we met up there, he taught
[26:54] us this melody.
[26:57] And so we we pra and then we taught it
[27:01] to a bunch of the other westerners. and
[27:04] we made on on a Tuesday. Then now the
[27:07] rainy season is over and we came back
[27:09] down. We're in Nanal and seeing Maharaji
[27:12] again. We decided that we were going to
[27:15] do the first puja to Maharaji done by
[27:20] westerners and we arranged on Tuesday
[27:23] which is Hanuman's day to have 80 pounds
[27:27] 80 pounds of laddus delivered to the
[27:30] temple with all the the the plates for
[27:34] the puja the dishes and the the arty
[27:36] lamp and everything and we were going to
[27:38] sing hanumanchalisa to Maharaji on
[27:40] Tuesday.
[27:44] So, and it was a big secret.
[27:47] Nobody, you know, we didn't tell
[27:49] anybody.
[27:50] And of course, we hadn't memorized the
[27:52] chalice yet. We were singing it, but we
[27:54] didn't memorize it. So, we get to the
[27:56] temple on Monday and we're sitting
[27:59] outside waiting for Maharaji to come out
[28:02] and he bursts through the doors of his
[28:05] room. He sits down. He says, "Anumalisa,
[28:08] sing it now.
[28:11] We went running for our books, you know,
[28:13] what are we doing? Ah, yeah. What are we
[28:14] going to do? And we were standing in
[28:16] front of him and we started to sing. And
[28:18] I'll never forget I got to the six
[28:20] verse. What was that? Uh,
[28:23] I can't go. Anyway, I made a mistake in
[28:26] pronunciation and he tried to correct me
[28:30] and I went
[28:33] and he went, "Never mind, never mind.
[28:35] Just sing." And from that moment on, he
[28:37] never corrected anybody, any westerner
[28:39] anymore about pronunciation.
[28:44] So
[28:45] that transformed
[28:48] these crazy westerners into a troop of
[28:51] performing monkeys.
[28:55] And whenever the Indian people were
[28:57] giving him a hard time, he said, "Now,
[28:59] come on over here." And then we would
[29:01] all gather around them and we would sing
[29:03] Hanumanisa. And you know in India they
[29:07] they have respect for your airspace.
[29:10] They don't step over your over you. So
[29:14] we would get around Maharaji and they'd
[29:16] be like locked out behind us and they
[29:19] couldn't even see him. You know we're
[29:20] standing there singing and they're like
[29:21] going what's going on here? you know,
[29:25] so he would do that quot and so we got
[29:27] to sing it to him many many many times
[29:30] and um
[29:36] you see we we we understood that the
[29:40] west the Indians saw him as Hanuman
[29:43] himself
[29:45] and they had told us many of their
[29:46] experiences when they actually had a
[29:50] vision of Hanuman w with Maharaji. For
[29:54] instance, sometimes someone would come
[29:56] to the temple
[29:58] and
[30:00] like a cuz it was on a on a pilgrimage
[30:02] place. Many times it were like tour
[30:04] buses. Somebody would come to the temple
[30:06] and they
[30:09] they go to the Hanuman temple and they'd
[30:11] bow and instead of seeing Hanaman they
[30:14] would see a guy sitting there with a
[30:16] blanket on and they would say they would
[30:19] ask somebody in the temple who's the guy
[30:20] in the temple sitting who's and they
[30:23] said what are you talking about and they
[30:24] go back and look and there's Hanuman
[30:25] instead of it was Maharaji giving them a
[30:29] a shot.
[30:33] So
[30:43] >> clean.
[30:46] >> Remeas wants you to know that the next
[30:49] time you get your teeth cleaned in the
[30:51] dentist office, you can hear the Hanuman
[30:53] Chalisa on Spotify.
[30:58] [Applause]
[31:01] So, not only will your teeth get pulled
[31:03] out, but you'll lose some bad karmas.
[31:08] So, uh let's see.
[31:11] The funny thing about
[31:14] us learning from the Indian devotees,
[31:17] one of my guru told me a story. He said
[31:20] we saw that the Indian people would come
[31:23] with these very soft apples and they
[31:25] would cut the apple up in small pieces
[31:27] and offer it to Maharaji. So one day one
[31:30] of these guys Balaramdas decided to do
[31:33] that. He said he came into the room
[31:36] there were some Indian people there
[31:37] Indian devotees and he sat down in front
[31:40] of Maharaji and he cut the apple and he
[31:42] offered it to Maharaji. He said the look
[31:46] on Maharaji's face was the way you would
[31:50] look if your dog sat up and started
[31:52] talking to you.
[31:59] That's kind of the way he saw us. Yeah.
[32:04] So,
[32:07] Hanamanchalisa is it's a hymn. It's an
[32:10] invocation.
[32:12] It's almost like a jigsaw puzzle.
[32:15] Every piece is is putting is creating
[32:21] that form of Hanuman within us. That now
[32:23] what is Hanuman also? Because it's just
[32:25] some monkey that jumps around out there.
[32:29] Maharaji said Hanuman, Krishna and
[32:31] Christ are the same.
[32:36] And you know there's a book called the
[32:38] unvarnished New Testament which is a
[32:42] translation
[32:43] of the New Testament from the original
[32:45] Greek
[32:47] and in the King James
[32:50] uh they talk about Holy Spirit right but
[32:53] in the original Greek what's tr it's
[32:57] translated as holy breath
[33:02] very different spirit is out there
[33:05] somewhere Because breath is in the body.
[33:08] Breath is here, not somewhere else. It's
[33:11] very different. And once again, breath
[33:13] and prana are linked as well. So,
[33:17] Hanuman and Christ are very similar.
[33:22] Direct connections to the one
[33:28] [Music]
[33:31] All
[33:34] [Music]
[33:40] right. So, we'll sing a couple of more.
[33:47] [Music]
[33:54] Okay. Wait, before we do that,
[33:58] the first four lines or eight lines are
[34:02] called chopai. It's a different meter
[34:04] and it's an introduction to the Hanuman
[34:06] Chalisa
[34:08] and it's a very important little piece
[34:11] of the puzzle.
[34:20] So that line
[34:22] it it likens the uh the dust from the
[34:26] lotus feet from the feet of the guru as
[34:28] the pollen from a lotus flower.
[34:31] And it says I take that pollen-like dust
[34:35] from the lotus feet of the guru to clean
[34:38] the mirror of my heart.
[34:47] This concept of the mir of the heart
[34:49] being a mirror is very interesting. When
[34:52] we look in a mirror and it's covered
[34:54] with dust and dirt, we see a very
[34:58] distorted
[35:00] unaccurate view of what's of what's in
[35:03] the mirror of our own face
[35:06] because of the dust on the mirror.
[35:09] So we take the the the the pollen like
[35:13] dust from the lotus feet of the guru
[35:15] which is called chan amred which is
[35:18] consciousness, bliss, reality, love,
[35:23] real love to clean the mirror of our
[35:26] hearts and then we begin to sing the
[35:30] praises of Hanuman and Ram.
[35:36] That's why this practice is a
[35:38] purification practice. It cleans the
[35:40] mirror of the heart
[35:45] because we
[35:47] we're all of us each one of us is seeing
[35:51] our own version of what we think is out
[35:54] there.
[35:56] And as many beings as there are in the
[35:58] world, that's how many versions
[36:01] of the world there are.
[36:04] Everybody sees their own subjective
[36:06] reality as though because of the dust on
[36:10] the mirror of the heart. The lust, the
[36:12] anger, the greed, the shame, the fear,
[36:14] the selfishness.
[36:16] This is what the dust is. Egoistic
[36:19] stuff.
[36:21] When that's cleared off, cleaned off,
[36:25] you see your true face. You see the
[36:27] soul, which is the same in every single
[36:31] being.
[36:33] That's the one.
[36:35] So we purify, we clean our hearts
[36:40] with these practices.
[36:43] The next line is buddhina.
[36:46] I know that I don't know That's
[36:48] what it means. I don't I I'm ignorant.
[36:52] So I I beg you Hanuman give me strength,
[36:56] give me intelligence, give me wisdom
[37:00] and
[37:02] remove the impurities in my heart.
[37:06] That's the first that's the beginning.
[37:08] That's what we're
[37:10] this is a propitiation. We are asking
[37:12] for something here. We're asking for
[37:14] help
[37:17] and then we go ahead and do the chalisa.
[37:20] So that's the first part.
[37:27] [Music]
[37:36] [Music]

[50:50] Mali.
[50:53] Maran
[51:04] Saka Malon.
[51:08] Oh,
[51:11] [Music]
[51:36] there that line. There's that phrase
[51:37] that we sing between the chalissas.
[51:40] Mangala morti marandan
[51:45] sakala amangala moola nanda.
[51:49] I don't know if it's written down
[51:50] anywhere but it's somewhere.
[51:53] Um and what it means is hanuman is the
[51:57] embodiment of everything that's
[52:00] auspicious and and
[52:04] uh good.
[52:07] And the the root d the destroyer of the
[52:10] root of all everything that's
[52:12] inospicious and bad for us.
[52:16] Mangala morti mutandon son of the wind
[52:20] saka among every single
[52:24] every single thing that that is not
[52:26] helpful for us that is negative in our
[52:28] lives anywhere in our subtle bodies.
[52:35] Saka,
[52:37] the root destroyer, the root remover of
[52:40] everything that it's not helpful for us.
[52:57] What time is it? What does that mean?
[53:01] This is what time it is.
[53:05] It's 4:30. 5:30.
[53:07] >> What time is it?
[53:08] >> 10 after
[53:09] >> 20 after
[53:10] >> 10 after.
[53:20] >> Oh, okay. So, the the auction is
[53:24] >> closing
[53:25] >> just about to end.
[53:26] >> It ends in five minutes. So, go spend
[53:28] your money
[53:30] if you have any. Um, we'll sing it again
[53:34] tonight
[53:36] once once again. It's a meditation. It's
[53:39] a mantra. It's an invocation. It's a
[53:42] visualization.
[53:45] It's a way of entering into
[53:48] more deeply onto the path and more
[53:51] deeply into your heart.
[53:55] Hanuman is Ramad. He's the messenger of
[53:58] Ram.
[54:00] the connection with with to Rahm.
[54:04] It's like in New York there was the 42nd
[54:07] Street shuttle.
[54:09] You get on on the east side, you can't
[54:11] get off until the west side.
[54:13] You get into Hanuman, you can't get off
[54:16] until you're in Ram because ultimately
[54:19] Hanuman and Ram are not different.
[54:23] Actually in one of the many Ramayanas
[54:27] uh Ram asks son how do you see me and he
[54:30] says when I identify with the body I
[54:33] serve you when I identify with the soul
[54:37] you are the whole and I am a part but
[54:40] when I know what's really happening you
[54:42] and I are one
[54:44] so it's a multi-level thing but at all
[54:47] times
[54:50] so one time
[54:53] Maharaji went to Chitrakud which is one
[54:55] of the places where
[54:57] uh Ram and Sitta lived for many years
[55:00] and Lakshman when they were banished
[55:02] from the kingdom
[55:04] and there's a place on the top of a
[55:06] place called Hanumandhara a a big
[55:09] mountain in Chitrakoot which is called
[55:12] Sitha Rosoi Sitha's kitchen
[55:16] and it's there that they lived for a
[55:18] while and she would cook the food for
[55:20] ramen laksh
[55:23] And one time Maharaji went up there with
[55:26] Dada Mukerji. Now there's a few books
[55:28] about Maharaji not only miracle of love
[55:31] but Dada wrote two books. One is called
[55:34] by His Grace and the near and the dear
[55:37] and
[55:39] they're worth reading and of course
[55:41] there's the books that Parvati put
[55:43] together.
[55:44] Um
[55:46] so Dada went there with Maharaji and
[55:50] Maharaji was sitting down there at Sith
[55:52] Rasoi where there's a stream a little
[55:55] coming up out of the mountain and
[55:57] Maharaji said to Dada Dada after
[56:01] Hanumanji burnt Lanka
[56:04] he came here to cool off
[56:07] by the stream by the water and then Dada
[56:10] told me he said then Maharaji said
[56:15] really kind of just talking to himself.
[56:17] He said, "But Hanumanji was always at
[56:20] peace."
[56:23] Always at peace. Even while he's killing
[56:26] the demons,
[56:28] serving Ram, doing everything, he's
[56:30] always in the right place.
[56:34] And that's where we are headed
[56:36] ourselves.
[56:39] When we reach the place where we are
[56:42] connected to our own souls, our own
[56:45] atma, our own true nature,
[56:49] regardless of what happens in the
[56:50] outside world, we will always be at
[56:53] peace because we're connected deeply to
[56:57] the truth.
[56:58] And Hanaman is one of the many ways
[57:03] to connect that way.
[57:05] So
[57:07] see you later.
[57:09] [Applause]
[57:10] [Music]
