Rodney Yee is a yoga teacher who has been dedicated to the practice for some 40 years, with a particular emphasis on the Iyengar tradition. From that foundation he keeps up an ongoing inquiry into the complexities of the human experience, and he is committed to unearthing deeper insights about the body and offering yoga tools and mindful practices to help people find peace.
An American-born Asian from California, he began his yoga journey in the 1980s by studying the intricacies of the human body, and over time his exploration widened to mind and spirituality, driven by a practical and inquisitive approach. His pursuit of wholeness started in his high school gymnastics days and continued through the study of philosophy and physical therapy at U.C. Davis and U.C. Berkeley. He left college to pursue dance, performing with the Oakland Ballet Company and the Matsuyama Dance Company of Tokyo. Yoga became the synthesis of these interests.
He built his foundation in Iyengar Yoga at The Yoga Room in Berkeley and the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco, learning from teachers including Donald Moyer, Manouso Manos and Ramanand Patel. In 1987 he co-founded The Piedmont Yoga studio with Richard Rosen and Claire Finn. He appeared in the Yoga Journal calendar in 1989 and 1991, which led to a video career under Healing Arts, later part of the Gaiam Company. He and Colleen Saidman also partnered with Donna Karan to establish UZIT LLC, bringing together yoga, Reiki, essential oils and meditation.
Since 2003 he has lived in Sag Harbor, New York, with his partner Colleen Saidman, and together they have a blended family. The two teach at Colleen's studio, Yoga Shanti, and offer classes, workshops, retreats and teacher trainings worldwide. Rodney teaches in person and by livestream from Yoga Shanti, leads an Advanced Yoga Workshop over Zoom, and has a library of on-demand classes.

Worth Knowing
Rodney Yee is a foundational figure in American yoga's mainstream integration—the teacher whose 1999 appearance on Oprah helped catapult yoga from niche practice into household consciousness. Beginning his yoga inquiry in 1980 while simultaneously training as a ballet dancer for Oakland Ballet and studying physical therapy and philosophy at UC Berkeley, Yee embodied the mind-body-spirit integration that would define his career. His illustrious teaching spans decades and continents, but his real cultural impact lies in making yoga accessible and credible to millions of Americans who had never encountered it before his television moment. Students and practitioners care about Yee's work because he represents a bridge between rigorous anatomical understanding, dance-trained physicality, and philosophical depth—not a generic wellness repackaging. His founding partnership at Yoga Shanti in Sag Harbor and Yoga Shanti New York City, alongside collaborations with designer Donna Karan on Urban Zen Integrative Therapy since 2001, signal his sustained influence in premium yoga education rather than commodified yoga culture.
