The Music of John De Kadt: Sound, Sacred Texture, and Lineage

The Sound Itself

John de Kadt's music is built around a refusal to hurry. The stated aim behind his work, to slow the world down and return to the tempo of nature, shows up in the arrangements. Songs and stories tend to unfold at walking pace or slower, with room left between phrases. Percussion and melodic instruments from several continents sit close to the voice instead of crowding it. The result is acoustic, hand-played, and tactile: skin on frame, breath on string or reed, a voice that sounds closer to a teller than a belter.

His voice carries two modes. One is sung, in the devotional and song-based work. The other is spoken, in the cadence of someone who has told ancient myths for more than 25 years. The two blur together. A spoken line can drift into melody, and a repeated sung phrase can behave like a refrain in an oral tale. Texture matters more than density. Expect a drum pulse, a sustained or plucked melodic line, and an unadorned voice, with silence treated as an instrument.

Lineage: Devotion, Myth, and Oral Tradition

De Kadt's catalog sits in the world of kirtan, mantra, and bhakti-influenced devotional music, but his lineage is wider than one tradition. His bio points to the oral storytelling of indigenous cultures and mystical traditions, and he treats story as "ritual and ceremony, a way of remembrance." That framing matters. In the devotional traditions he draws on, repetition is a way of entering a state, not a way of filling time. In myth-telling, a story is told to be remembered rather than consumed.

Where a classic kirtan evening runs on call-and-response and rising communal energy, de Kadt's work often leans toward the hearth: a teller, an instrument, and a room paying attention. It is devotional in intent without being tied to a single liturgy.

The Signature Contribution: DrumStory

His most distinctive contribution is DrumStory, his name for telling myths while playing an array of percussive and melodic instruments. The rhythm is not accompaniment laid under a narration. It is part of the telling, marking the turn of a plot, a crossing of thresholds, or the quiet after a loss. The approach joins two things the conscious-music world usually keeps in separate rooms, the sung mantra and the long-form story.

DrumStory has been performed across Asia, Europe, and North America, in festivals, fine arts theaters, churches, and retreat centers. A format that works in both a theater and a church is unusual, and it suggests the work holds up whether the audience arrives seeking art, worship, or stillness.

Collaborators and Community

De Kadt is a founding member of The Rememberers, a multidisciplinary musical and storytelling trio that tours regularly. The group weaves ancient myths with contemporary, original songs. Here his solo storytelling meets song craft, and the myths are carried by new material alongside old narrative.

His other major collaborative act is BlessFest, which he created and produces. Since 2018 it has gathered music, healing, and sacred arts on the East Coast of the United States and on the Big Island of Hawai'i. A festival is a different kind of authorship from an album, and in curating it he shapes the wider field of artists and practitioners his listeners encounter.

A First-Listen Guide

Come expecting patience. If you know kirtan mainly as a rising, hands-in-the-air group chant, de Kadt's work will feel quieter and more narrative. Give a piece several minutes before judging it, since the effect is cumulative.

Several things may surprise you:

  • The spoken word. A good portion of the experience is storytelling, and the myths are not softened into self-help parables.
  • The instrument range. Percussion and melodic voices from different parts of the world can shift within a single piece.
  • The restraint. Moments of near-silence are intentional.
  • The live setting. His work is built for rooms, so recordings may feel like one half of the experience. If you can, hear him live.

With a Spotify following of roughly 273,600, he reaches a substantial audience, but the music rewards the listener who sits still rather than the one who skims.

Where He Fits in the Conscious-Music Landscape

The conscious-music field has many devotional leaders, sound-healing practitioners, and acoustic songwriters. De Kadt overlaps with all of them without sitting squarely in any. His closest neighbors are kirtan and mantra artists on one side and acoustic world-music and medicine-music performers on the other. What sets him apart is the weight he gives to narrative. He is closer to a ceremonial storyteller who sings than to a singer who occasionally speaks.

That position gives him a particular usefulness. For listeners who find repetitive chanting hard to enter, myth offers another doorway, with characters, stakes, and consequences. For those already steeped in mantra, his work adds a long-form, story-driven counterpart. In a landscape that often promises acceleration toward peace, his proposal is simpler and harder: slow down, listen to a story the old way, and let the drum keep time.
