Faisal Zedan is an Arabic percussionist, drummer and drum teacher, born in Lebanon and raised in Syria. He has lived in California since 1991. He plays the derbakki, riqq and frame drums from Arabic and Middle Eastern traditions, and records with the duhulla as well.
He has taught Arabic drums and rhythms since 1996, with a focus on the traditions of Syria and Egypt. His approach draws on the older schools of Arabic music. His derbakki classes begin with hand mechanics and correct positions, moving from fingers and wrist to arm, elbow and shoulder. They then build from basic beats toward embellishments. His riqq classes cover the holding positions, finger-playing systems, and the classical, pop and belly dance styles.
On stage, Faisal performs classical, folk, urban and pop Arabic music, as well as belly dance music. He also plays Turkish, Persian, Kurdish, Armenian, Afghan, North African, Greek and Balkan repertoire. He works with groups and individuals to preserve, perform and teach Arabic music and culture, using the drums as a bridge to people of other traditions and backgrounds.
He created Ajyal, a platform for collaboration with local and visiting musicians. The name is Arabic for "generations".
Worth Knowing
Faisal Zedan is an Arabic percussionist and drummer born in Lebanon, raised in Syria, and based in California since 1991. He is recognized as a serious keeper and transmitter of Arabic and Middle Eastern percussion traditions—particularly derbakki and riqq—with deep knowledge spanning Syrian, Egyptian, Turkish, Persian, Kurdish, Armenian, Afghan, North African, Greek, and Balkan musical idioms. Since 1996, he has been teaching Arabic drums and rhythms while performing across classical, folk, pop, and belly dance contexts. What sets his work apart is his commitment to preserving musical traditions while building bridges across cultures; he founded the Ajyal music platform ("Ajyal" meaning "generations" in Arabic) specifically to document and present Arabic and other global musical traditions through collaboration with local and visiting musicians. People who engage with Faisal's work tend to be serious students of rhythm, percussion, and cultural continuity—not casual listeners seeking a quick introduction, but people interested in deep technique, lineage, and the living practice of centuries-old traditions.
