IKAL Tulum Hotel — 77780 Tulum, Mexico
A Mayan-inspired sanctuary hotel in a protected park on Tulum's Caribbean coast
The day at IKAL tends to start in the shala, an open-air hall the sanctuary calls its daily heart, and to end at the Sacred Fire, where the community gathers after dark. Between them are a temazcal, a natural pool framed by jungle, a beachfront volleyball court and an oceanfront beach club. All of it sits within a protected ecological park with direct access to the Caribbean Sea in Tulum.
The hotel was conceived as a sanctuary, and the architecture carries that intention. Architects Luis and Ricardo Gil describe it as "a space that makes architecture earthly, harmonious, and that takes into account the natural resources of the land as well as ancestral knowledge." Casa Alacran is a circular, biomimetic suite built with bamboo and Chukum, a traditional Mayan wall finish. Bungalows ring a central seawater pool. Tree house and jungle suites add look-out towers, plunge pools and outdoor showers.
The Garchen Tara Stupa at IKAL is, by the property's own account, the second in the world, with others to come. It is described as a place to practice love and compassion, meant to benefit the community and the Mayan jungle through meditation.
The weekly program draws teachers from Brazil, India, the US, Argentina and Mexico. It includes sunrise sadhana, Kundalini, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Hatha, pranayama and meditation. Gurmukh and Gurushabd teach Kundalini on Fridays and Sundays, and a one-week Level 2 Kundalini teacher training on authentic relationships ran April 15 to 22, 2026. Ceremonies are held Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, among them full moon, new moon, sound healing, cacao and kirtan, with a Wednesday afternoon workshop at the Sacred Fire. Children take part in weekend programs, supported by the NGO LADLE. RestAura, a gathering of music, ceremony and yoga, was born here and is scheduled to return to IKAL Tepoztlán from November 13 to 16, 2026.
