Just a Dream: Illusion andReality in Spiritual Practice

Donna De Lory

In this brief but potent meditation on consciousness, Donna De Lory uses the ancient spiritual metaphor of life as a dream to explore how our ordinary perception of reality—grounded in the illusion of separation—obscures our deeper nature. The "dream" is not meant literally, but as a teaching tool: just as a dream feels absolutely real while we're in it but dissolves upon waking, our waking life operates under an illusion of separation that spiritual practice gradually unmasks. The video invites viewers to question what is real, to recognize the dream-like quality of habitual consciousness, and to consider what awakening from that dream might mean.

What Does "Life as a Dream" Mean in Spiritual Teaching?

The metaphor of life as a dream appears across many wisdom traditions—from Hindu Advaita Vedanta to Buddhist philosophy to non-dual spirituality. Donna De Lory draws on this teaching to suggest that our ordinary waking consciousness operates under a kind of spell, a habitual way of perceiving that feels absolutely solid and real but is, in a fundamental sense, illusory. This doesn't mean the world doesn't exist; rather, it means our sense of separation from life, from others, and from the ground of being itself is a kind of dream-logic—a coherent but ultimately false narrative we construct and then mistake for truth.

When you're dreaming at night, the dream world seems completely real. You don't question its laws of physics or its absurd logic until you wake up. Similarly, in the "dream" of ordinary consciousness, we experience ourselves as separate subjects looking out at a world of separate objects. This subject-object split, the sense of "me here" and "everything else out there," becomes the foundation of how we interpret reality. But this foundation is never questioned; it's simply assumed. Spiritual practice, in this view, is a gradual or sudden awakening to the illusory nature of that assumption.

How Does the Illusion of Separation Work?

The illusion of separation operates so seamlessly that it's virtually invisible. It's woven into language, into thought, into the very structure of how we perceive. We are born into a dream already in progress, taught to identify with a separate self, to pursue pleasure and avoid pain, to protect "me" from "them." This separation is reinforced constantly by culture, education, habit, and the way our nervous systems evolved to ensure survival.

But from the perspective of non-dual spiritual teaching—which De Lory's work often reflects—this separate self is not truly separate. It's a localized expression of a unified whole, like a wave that believes itself to be separate from the ocean. The illusion is so complete that most people live their entire lives without suspecting it. They believe in their separation so thoroughly that they suffer its consequences: fear, greed, competitiveness, loneliness, and the endless pursuit of security in a world that is always changing.

What Does Awakening from the Dream Look Like?

Spiritual awakening, in this framework, is not the attainment of something new but the recognition of what has always been true. It's waking up from the dream while the dream is still happening. This doesn't necessarily mean life becomes dramatically different in outward form—you still have a body, still live in the world—but the sense of who you are, and how you relate to life, undergoes a fundamental shift.

Awakening might manifest as:

  • A loss of the compulsive sense that you must protect or improve yourself
  • A recognition of interconnection with all life, replacing the illusion of separation
  • A peace or ease that doesn't depend on external circumstances
  • A clarity about the nature of thought and perception, seeing them as movements of consciousness rather than absolute truths
  • A dissolving of the anxiety that comes from identifying with a fragile, mortal, separate self

The metaphor of waking from a dream captures something important: you don't need to become awake; you need to recognize that you already are. The awakeness is already present; what's needed is the recognition, the shift in perspective.

How Does Spiritual Practice Relate to This Dream?

If life is a dream, what role does spiritual practice play? In this view, practice is the means by which the dream begins to lucid dream itself—to become aware of its own nature. Meditation, inquiry, contemplation, and devotional practice can all serve to gradually weaken the grip of the illusion, creating gaps in the habitual patterns through which the dreamer might glimpse the dreaming itself.

Practice doesn't force awakening; rather, it creates conditions where awakening becomes possible. It's like repeatedly questioning the logic of a dream until, even within the dream, you begin to notice its dream-like quality. You stop being entirely hypnotized by the narrative and begin to see the machinery of the narrative itself.

Where to Go From Here

To explore this teaching more deeply, consider sitting in quiet meditation and observing the nature of your own consciousness. Notice the sense of separation: Is there actually a clear boundary between "you" and "the world"? Or is that boundary a concept, a useful fiction created by thought? Watch thoughts arise and dissolve. Observe how the sense of a separate self also arises and dissolves. The metaphor of the dream invites you to hold your ordinary assumptions about reality lightly, to question what you take for granted, and to remain open to the possibility that awakening is not something distant but intimately present, waiting only to be recognized. Donna De Lory's work in music and teaching often points to this recognition—the joy and freedom that come when the dream of separation begins to crack, and what was always one, whole, and complete reveals itself.

In spiritual philosophy, 'life as a dream' is a metaphor suggesting that our ordinary perception of reality—based on the illusion of separation between self and other—is fundamentally illusory, much like a dream that feels real until we wake up. This doesn't deny the world's existence but challenges our assumption of being separate subjects in a world of separate objects.
The illusion of separation operates through language, thought, culture, and survival instincts that teach us to identify with a separate self. This creates a subject-object split so seamless and early-learned that it remains invisible, shaping how we perceive and interpret everything without question.
Spiritual awakening is waking up to the illusory nature of the sense of separation while still living in the world. It's a shift in perspective that recognizes your fundamental interconnection with all life, replacing the fear and seeking that comes from identifying as a separate, mortal self.
Awakening is primarily a shift in consciousness and identity rather than necessarily dramatic external change. You still have a body and live in the world, but your sense of who you are and how you relate to life transforms—typically bringing peace, clarity, and freedom from the anxiety of defending a separate self.
Spiritual practice like meditation and inquiry creates gaps in habitual patterns and helps you observe the dream-like nature of consciousness itself. It doesn't force awakening but gradually weakens the grip of illusion, allowing the recognition that awakeness is already present—you need only recognize it.
Spiritual traditions describe awakening as sometimes sudden (a sudden shift in perspective) and sometimes gradual (a slow weakening of the illusion through consistent practice). Both pathways reflect the same recognition, just arriving through different processes.
