Transcendental Forgiveness: BeyondHabitual Apology

Preethaji distinguishes transcendental forgiveness—which flows from a state of deep connection and expanded self—from the habitual, conditioned forgiveness most people practice. Real forgiveness requires presence and awareness rather than automatic behavior patterns. When forgiveness becomes merely a habit, like eating when hungry or checking social media, it loses transformative power and perpetuates a cycle of unconscious repetition. True forgiveness emerges only when you expand your consciousness beyond the small self and reconnect with the fundamental interconnectedness of existence.

What Is Transcendental Forgiveness?

Preethaji opens the talk by establishing what transcendental forgiveness is not. Most people have learned forgiveness through conditioning—from parents, teachers, religious institutions, or books. This conditioned forgiveness, she explains, is merely a habit. When you practice this kind of forgiveness, you're not truly processing anything. Instead, you're mechanically performing an action designed to make yourself feel better, the way you might eat breakfast when you're hungry or scroll social media when you feel bored.

The forgiveness taught by tradition and culture lacks genuine awareness. "You're just doing it so that you can feel nice about it," Preethaji says. This habitual apology operates without thought, emotion, or real feeling—it's purely behavioral. You do it because that's what you've been trained to do, not because something has shifted within you.

Why Habitual Forgiveness Keeps You Stuck

When you operate from habit rather than consciousness, you remain trapped in repeating patterns. "When you are going to keep behaving in a habitual way, you're not going to create anything new. You are just going to have the same life over and over again," Preethaji explains. This repetition breeds boredom, and from that boredom emerges continued harm—both to yourself and others.

Habitual forgiveness is actually part of the problem. It allows unconscious patterns to persist because nothing genuinely shifts in your internal state. You say the words, you perform the gesture, but your consciousness hasn't expanded. Without expansion, you cannot help but keep hurting people.

The State of Connection and Expanded Self

Real forgiveness comes from somewhere else entirely. According to Preethaji, true forgiveness "is coming from a state of total connection. It is coming from a state of an expanded self. It is coming from a state of being present." This is not something you can force or perform. It's the natural outcome of a shift in consciousness.

To forgive authentically, you must first examine why you need forgiveness in the first place. This examination requires going inward, not outward. It requires questioning whether your impulse to forgive or ask for forgiveness is genuine or merely habitual. Real forgiveness doesn't bypass the wound—it arises when you've reconnected to something larger than your individual hurt or guilt.

Becoming a Real Human Being

Preethaji calls for a fundamental shift in how we exist. "We all have to become human beings who are real, not just keep behaving in a habitual way," she says. This isn't poetic language—it's a practical diagnosis. Most people are operating from scripts written by their conditioning, not from their own awareness.

A creative life—one that moves forward and creates something genuinely new—requires an expanded consciousness and a state of connection. Without these, you're locked in repetition. This matters not only for your relationships but for how you interact with the world itself.

The Larger Context: Consciousness and Planetary Crisis

Preethaji situates this discussion within a cosmic and ecological perspective. She notes that humanity represents only 0.01% of life on Earth, yet has managed to destroy 80% of the planet. We've destroyed oceans, rainforests, and cultivable land at an accelerating rate. This destruction is not separate from our inner state—it's a direct expression of it.

"What we are doing to ourselves, what we are doing to everyone else and to this planet Earth is destruction," she states. This has been possible because we remain unconscious, habitual, and disconnected.

It took 13.8 billion years for the universe to create the gift of life, family, friendship, and the specific gifts present in your own life. Yet most people cannot genuinely enjoy, nurture, or connect to these gifts "from a beautiful state." This inability stems directly from operating from habit rather than consciousness.

The Path Forward: Expanding Your Self

The implied practice is clear: if you want to move beyond habitual forgiveness to something real and transformative, you must expand your sense of self. This isn't about becoming a "better person" in a conventional sense. It's about recognizing that your individual self is connected to everything—to the 13.8-billion-year history of creation, to all beings, to the planet itself.

From that expanded state, forgiveness is no longer something you do. It becomes something you are. You cannot hold grudges or ask for forgiveness as a transaction when you recognize that separateness itself is an illusion born from contracted consciousness.

Where to Go from Here

Consider where you might be practicing habitual forgiveness in your own life. Notice the moments you apologize without genuine feeling or forgive without real release. These are opportunities to pause and ask: Am I connected to this person right now? Have I expanded my perspective to include theirs? Or am I simply performing a script?

Preethaji's teaching suggests that working toward expanded consciousness—through meditation, reflection, or practices that reconnect you to the whole—is prerequisite to authentic forgiveness. Forgiveness, in this framework, is not something to practice; it's something that naturally emerges when you're not contracted into a small, separate, habitual self. The work is internal. The forgiveness follows naturally.

[0:22] born from ideal we are not talking about

[0:25] the forgiveness that's born from

[0:27] conditioning we are not talking about

[0:29] that forgiveness that your parents have

[0:31] taught you or your teachers have taught

[0:34] you or you've written some books or

[0:36] religion has taught you that is not the

[0:39] forgiveness we are talking about because

[0:40] that forgiveness that you are practicing

[0:44] is merely a habit you're just doing it

[0:47] so that you can feel nice about it you

[0:50] know you just want to feel nice just

[0:52] like you wake up in the morning you're

[0:53] hungry you want to eat breakfast in the

[0:56] same way if you do something wrong you

[0:57] just want to say firk you see the dim

[1:02] cross Oh funny is all that nah no no

[1:07] attention no thought process no emotion

[1:10] no feeling just an habitual behavior

[1:13] just like when you have hungry or to eat

[1:15] just like when you feel poor you need to

[1:17] be on Facebook or Instagram or watch a

[1:19] movie you really need to go within and

[1:21] find out why you need forgiveness or why

[1:26] you have to forgive someone it is coming

[1:29] from a state of total connection it is

[1:32] coming from a state of and expand itself

[1:34] it is coming from a state of being

[1:44] human beings who are real okay not just

[1:48] keep behaving in a habitual way when you

[1:51] are going to keep behaving in a habitual

[1:53] way you're not going to create anything

[1:55] new you are just going to have the same

[1:58] life over and over again and they're

[2:00] just going to be totally bored with it

[2:02] and then that boredom you're going to

[2:04] keep hurting everybody

[2:06] so we need to have a life that is very

[2:08] creative we need to have a life that is

[2:09] moving forward if that has to happen you

[2:13] need to have an expand itself or connect

[2:15] that state

[2:19] [Music]

[2:22] from 13.8 billion years ago where this

[2:27] universe came into creation if we take a

[2:30] moment and start to reflect upon where

[2:33] we are as human beings today of where we

[2:37] are as an internal state of where we are

[2:41] in terms of this planet Earth we are in

[2:45] a very very bad state 0.01% is our

[2:51] population on this planet compared to

[2:53] every species that exists so if there

[2:55] are butterflies bees insects lions

[2:58] tigers elephants all honeybees

[3:00] everything you put together plants

[3:02] everything you put together we are 0.01%

[3:04] but we have managed to destroy 80% of

[3:08] this earth we are managed to destroy its

[3:10] oceans we have managed to destroy

[3:14] and we have managed to destroy the

[3:16] rainforests our cultivable land is

[3:18] constantly reducing we are in a state of

[3:22] total destruction what we are doing to

[3:26] ourselves what we are doing to everyone

[3:27] else and to this planet Earth is

[3:30] destruction it has taken us 13.8 billion

[3:34] years to have this gift to have this

[3:38] gift of life to have this gift of family

[3:41] to have this gift of friends to have the

[3:44] gift of what you have in your life

[3:45] whatever that is but are you able to

Regular forgiveness is conditioned behavior—something learned from parents, religion, or culture that you perform habitually to feel better. Transcendental forgiveness emerges from a state of genuine connection and expanded awareness, where you're fully present rather than operating from automatic patterns.
When you forgive or apologize from habit rather than awareness, nothing changes internally. You remain in the same contracted state that created the harm in the first place, so the patterns repeat. Real change requires expanding your consciousness, not just repeating conditioned behaviors.
Ask yourself whether you're truly present and connected when you forgive, or whether you're performing an action designed to feel better. Genuine forgiveness comes with a felt sense of expansion and connection; habitual forgiveness feels mechanical and emotionless.
You can perform forgiveness as a habit, but it won't be transformative. True forgiveness requires an expanded self and a state of connection. If your consciousness is contracted, you're likely just repeating patterns that will eventually lead to hurting people again.
Expanded self means recognizing your connection to all beings and the universe itself, rather than viewing yourself as separate and isolated. From this state, forgiveness isn't something you have to force—it arises naturally because you no longer identify with the small, hurt self.
Our ecological crisis reflects our inner state: contracted, unconscious, and habitual. Humans represent 0.01% of life yet have destroyed 80% of the planet. We cannot genuinely care for each other or the Earth while operating from unconscious habit. Authentic forgiveness requires the same expanded consciousness needed to repair our relationship with nature.
