Alignment-Based Vinyasa Yoga forPresent Moment Awareness

Selena Lael
Selena Lael

9 min di lettura

This 60-minute vinyasa yoga practice offers more than a physical workout—it serves as an invitation to remember who you are beneath the noise of daily life. Selena Lael structures this session around alignment-based sequencing, weaving together movement, breath, and the philosophical roots of yoga to create a practice that honors both body and spirit. Whether you're new to vinyasa or have years on the mat, this approach emphasizes listening to your body's wisdom rather than pushing through discomfort for the sake of achievement.

The session begins with an important reminder: yoga extends far beyond the physical postures most Westerners encounter. While asana practice—the movement component—offers tremendous benefits for strength, flexibility, and detoxification, it represents just one limb of a much broader path. Yoga invites practitioners to become "the most loving, kind, best version of ourselves," to treat both ourselves and others well, and to move past external distractions into the stillness where our infinite nature resides. This framing transforms what could be a simple exercise class into a contemplative practice aimed at awakening.

What Does Alignment-Based Vinyasa Mean?

Alignment-based vinyasa distinguishes itself from flow-focused classes by emphasizing precise positioning and body awareness in each posture. Rather than rushing through sequences, practitioners receive detailed cuing about joint placement, muscle engagement, and safe transitions. Selena notes that this intermediate session will not break down every pose the way a beginner class would, which places responsibility on students to honor their bodies and skip any movement that feels unfamiliar or unsafe.

The practice opens with foundational alignment principles visible even in the initial seated posture: chin slightly tucked, spine tall, shoulders relaxed back and down, and tailbone gently dropping without tucking. This establishes a template that carries through every subsequent position. The instruction to "feel the tailbone gently dropping down—we're not tucking it but there's this heaviness" illustrates the nuanced approach. Rather than forcing the pelvis into a position, practitioners cultivate awareness of grounding while maintaining the spine's natural curves.

When students move to hands and knees, the alignment emphasis continues: wrists beneath shoulders, knees beneath hips, creases of the wrists parallel to the mat's top edge, fingers spread wide, and weight pressing through the base of the index fingers and thumbs. The instruction to "feel the crown of the head reaching toward the top of the mat" while the navel engages toward the spine demonstrates how proper alignment activates core stability even in this preparatory position.

How Does Breath Work Support Yoga Practice?

Before any movement begins, Selena introduces pranayama—breath regulation—as the foundation for the physical practice. Students receive guidance to deepen the breath and can engage the three-part breath (dirga pranayama) or ujjayi breath depending on their familiarity with these techniques. This isn't merely about oxygenating muscles; it's about creating a rhythm that links mind and body, transforming disconnected postures into a meditative flow.

The instruction to maintain "a slight space between the lips and the teeth" addresses a common pattern of jaw clenching that reflects stress, control, and often an underlying sense of not feeling safe. By consciously softening the jaw, practitioners send a signal to the nervous system that they can relax, become receptive, and release the need to control every moment. This subtle adjustment ripples through the entire practice, affecting not just facial tension but belly softness and overall receptivity to the practice's benefits.

Throughout the physical sequences—moving through plank variations, standing poses like warrior two, forward folds, and balancing postures—the breath remains the anchor. When alignment becomes challenging or muscles begin to fatigue, returning to steady, deep breathing helps practitioners stay present rather than abandoning form or mental focus.

What Role Does Intention Setting Play?

After breath establishment comes the practice of sankalpa—setting an intention. Selena provides specific instruction on how to frame this intention: speak it in present tense as if it already exists in your life. Rather than "I want to be peaceful" (which places peace perpetually in the future), practitioners affirm "I am peaceful" or "I am healthy" or "I am living my life beautifully." This present-tense declaration creates what she calls a "future memory"—a lived experience of the desired state that begins to rewire neural pathways.

The sankalpa serves as a North Star throughout the practice. When the physical challenges intensify—holding a side plank variation or maintaining balance in a standing pose—the intention reminds practitioners why they came to the mat. It transforms effort from ego-driven achievement into aligned action toward an authentic aspiration.

Why Does She Emphasize Honoring Your Body?

A thread running through the entire session is the repeated invitation to honor individual bodies and their current capacities. Selena explicitly states that students should never do something "just because I'm doing it or because you think you should." This radical permission to opt out, rest, or modify stands in contrast to achievement-oriented fitness culture that valorizes pushing through pain.

The practice includes options for props—blocks, blankets, straps—though Selena doesn't demonstrate with them since not everyone has access. She encourages students with props to use them freely, removing any stigma around modifications. When introducing more challenging variations, she consistently offers alternatives and reminds practitioners they can watch rather than participate if a movement feels uncertain.

This approach recognizes that yoga's physical component should serve the body, not stress it. Even as sequences build heat and demand strength, the overarching framework remains nourishing rather than depleting. Selena notes that practice "can be a deeply nourishing presence and experience together" even when it gets "a little strong at times." The distinction between strength and strain becomes crucial—one builds capacity while respecting limits, the other tears down in service of external standards.

How Does the Practice Build Progressively?

The session follows classical vinyasa structure, beginning with seated centering, moving through all-fours warm-ups, building to standing sequences, and eventually moving toward floor work and final relaxation (savasana). From tabletop position, students extend limbs one at a time—right leg back, then adding opposite arm—to wake up core stability and proprioception before transitioning to more complex poses.

The warm-up phase includes wrist preparation, recognizing that many practitioners carry tension in forearms and wrists or lack the conditioning for sustained weight-bearing on the hands. By dedicating time to wrist mobilization and strengthening, the practice reduces injury risk and builds capacity for poses like plank and downward-facing dog.

Standing sequences incorporate familiar poses like warrior two, but with attention to the details that make them both safe and effective: front knee tracking over the ankle, back foot grounded, shoulders stacked over hips, gaze soft. The transitions between poses receive equal attention to the peak postures themselves. How you move from downward dog to a standing lunge matters as much as the lunge itself for developing body awareness and preventing compensation patterns.

What Makes This Practice "Nourishing" Despite Physical Challenge?

The term "nourishing" might seem contradictory when applied to a practice that includes sustained holds, core work, and balance challenges. Yet Selena's approach demonstrates how physical intensity can feed rather than deplete when held within a container of awareness, breath, and self-compassion. The nourishment comes not from avoiding difficulty but from meeting it with presence rather than aggression.

Instructions to maintain soft jaw, soft face, soft gaze even during challenging holds exemplify this principle. The body can be strong—navel hugging toward spine, legs engaged, arms bearing weight—while the face remains relaxed. This teaches a profound lesson applicable beyond the mat: we can meet life's challenges with strength and stability while maintaining inner softness and openness.

The practice also nourishes by moving toxins out of the body through compression, extension, and twisting actions that massage internal organs and stimulate lymphatic flow. The combination of breath work and movement increases circulation, which carries both oxygen and waste products more efficiently. But perhaps most importantly, the practice nourishes by providing a full hour of presence—time when the mind isn't scrolling, planning, or rehearsing, but simply inhabiting the body's experience moment by moment.

How Does Yoga Connect to Awakening Beyond the Physical?

Selena frames yoga as "this invitation for us to remember who we are... this path to living a beautiful full life and awakening beyond this experience of the humanness of the dream and to the fullness of who we are, whatever that might truly be." This philosophical grounding elevates the practice from exercise to spiritual inquiry. The physical postures become a laboratory for exploring larger questions: Who am I beyond this body? What remains constant when everything else changes? Can I find stillness within movement?

The instruction to "come out of all of the external distractions and move deeper and deeper within the stillness of our being" points toward yoga's ultimate aim in classical texts—not flexibility or strength but direct recognition of awareness itself. The "stillness of our being" exists always, regardless of external circumstances or internal turbulence. Physical practice offers a tangible entry point for minds that find seated meditation too abstract or challenging.

By repeatedly returning attention to breath, sensation, and alignment, practitioners train the capacity for presence that serves awakening. Each time the mind wanders to tomorrow's meeting or yesterday's conversation and then returns to the feeling of the floor beneath the feet, a small strengthening of awareness occurs. Over time, these micro-returns to presence compound into a genuine shift in how consciousness relates to experience.

Where to Go From Here

If this approach resonates, consider establishing a consistent home practice rather than waiting for perfect conditions or the ideal class. Selena offers multiple recordings and leads live weekly sessions, creating an ongoing community of practice. Her 10-day course "Practices for a Peaceful Life" provides structured progression for those wanting to deepen their engagement.

Beyond consuming more content, the real invitation is to bring yoga's principles into daily life. Can you notice jaw clenching during a difficult conversation and consciously soften? Can you set a sankalpa for your workday phrased in present tense? Can you honor your body's needs for rest even when productivity culture demands more? These small translations of yoga philosophy into lived experience create transformation that extends far beyond the mat.

Remember Selena's core instruction: always prioritize savasana. Even if you must end early, take at least five minutes for integration in final relaxation. This rest period isn't laziness—it's when the nervous system consolidates the practice's benefits, when conscious and subconscious processes integrate, when the seeds planted during active practice can begin to sprout. In a culture that glorifies constant motion, the willingness to lie still and do nothing may be the most radical practice of all.

[4:28] i lead live sessions each week

[4:30] i have a 10 day course deal with

[4:32] practices for a peaceful life and we

[4:34] have a community group here on the app

[4:36] called love heals all

[4:38] i warmly welcome you to join us in the

[4:41] group love feels all it's a beautiful

[4:43] community space

[4:45] full of love and compassion and

[4:47] inspiration and

[4:49] uh just a wonderful place to be together

[4:52] to whether we're

[4:54] having a rough day or feeling like our

[4:57] best most vibrant self

[5:00] it's a space for each of us just as we

[5:02] are

[5:06] so before we move into our yoga asana

[5:08] practice

[5:10] for anyone who's maybe newer to yoga

[5:13] yoga is so much more than these physical

[5:15] practices although this is what most of

[5:17] us are exposed to in western culture

[5:21] the physical movement is just one aspect

[5:24] of this

[5:26] beautiful life path of yoga this path to

[5:31] be

[5:32] the

[5:33] most loving kind best version of

[5:35] ourselves to

[5:37] treat others well to treat ourselves

[5:40] well to

[5:42] come out of all of the external

[5:44] distractions and move deeper and deeper

[5:46] within the stillness of our being

[5:49] where this

[5:51] presence this self this infinite space

[5:54] is always there

[5:57] and yoga is this invitation for us to

[6:00] remember who we are

[6:02] it is this path

[6:04] to living a beautiful full life

[6:07] and awakening

[6:09] beyond this experience of the humanness

[6:13] of the dream

[6:14] and to the fullness of who we are

[6:17] whatever that might truly be

[6:21] so with that i really invite you to

[6:23] honor your body this is a fantastic way

[6:25] to serve the body to strengthen to open

[6:28] to

[6:29] move toxins out of the body

[6:31] and

[6:33] i really just invite you to be where

[6:34] you're at today if i'm doing anything

[6:36] that feels unfamiliar or unsafe or you

[6:40] don't feel comfortable doing it please

[6:41] you can just take a resting pose you can

[6:43] watch there's no need to stress and

[6:45] strain or do something just because i'm

[6:48] doing it or because you think you should

[6:50] i really invite you to listen to your

[6:53] body let this be a nourishing experience

[6:55] even though it may get a little strong

[6:58] at times this can be a deeply nourishing

[7:00] presence and experience together

[7:05] and again if you have any props that you

[7:07] like to use please have those available

[7:09] i don't generally lead practice with

[7:11] props

[7:12] as not everyone has access to them but

[7:14] please do have any props that you'd like

[7:16] to use

[7:19] and i think that's uh

[7:23] that's about it

[7:25] i invite you to find a comfortable

[7:26] seated position

[7:30] and

[7:31] as always if something happens with the

[7:34] sound or something

[7:36] changes and you can't hear me or we have

[7:37] some glitch in the matrix

[7:41] just go ahead and drop several emojis in

[7:44] the chat because i can't actually read

[7:46] what you've written from here but if you

[7:48] drop many emojis in the chat i can see

[7:50] something is not working and i can come

[7:53] back over and we can address the issue

[7:58] thank you

[8:00] okay so find this a comfortable seated

[8:02] position whatever works best for your

[8:04] body

[8:07] close the eyes allow the chin to be

[8:09] slightly tucked

[8:10] sit tall relax the shoulders back and

[8:12] down

[8:15] feel the tailbone gently dropping down

[8:17] we're not tucking it but there's this

[8:20] heaviness and the tailbone and the

[8:21] pelvis

[8:22] so we become more anchored

[8:27] begin to deepen the breath you can

[8:29] engage

[8:30] the three-part breath you can indicate

[8:33] the guy upon the um

[8:39] this session is listed as intermediate

[8:41] intermediate

[8:43] as i will not be

[8:45] breaking down

[8:46] all of the poses the way that i would in

[8:48] a beginner experience

[8:50] so again please really honor your body

[8:52] listening to your body if you're not

[8:55] following my cues feel free to just

[8:57] watch

[8:58] and then try it after

[9:04] allow there to be a slight space between

[9:06] the lips and the teeth

[9:08] we'll find in our lives that when we

[9:10] walk around with a clenched jaw as much

[9:13] as it is an expression of stress and it

[9:15] can be an expression of other most other

[9:18] emotions

[9:19] it's often a an expression of this need

[9:22] to be in control which is rooted in not

[9:24] feeling safe

[9:26] so let's give our bodies an invitation

[9:28] to soften to relax to become more

[9:30] receptive

[9:32] as we relax the

[9:35] jaw then soften the belly

[9:40] place a kind hand on your heart center

[9:44] and just make some circles on your chest

[9:47] close circles

[9:49] really feel this connection between your

[9:51] palm and your heart center

[10:03] relax your hand down again

[10:08] bring both palms to touch with the heart

[10:10] anjali mudra

[10:14] we'll chant the sound on one time

[10:16] together

[10:19] take a full deep breath in

[10:27] [Music]

[10:47] allow your chin to your chest

[10:50] set your sun fault by your intention for

[10:53] practice

[10:54] and when we create a sun culpa we create

[10:56] it to be present tense so rather than

[10:59] i want to be happy or i want to be

[11:01] strong or i want to feel peaceful or

[11:05] someday

[11:06] we speak this intention as if it is

[11:08] already happening in our lives this

[11:10] future memory is being said i am

[11:13] peaceful i am healthy i am whole

[11:17] i am living my life beautifully it's

[11:19] it's

[11:20] it's a beautiful day ahead of me

[11:36] release the hands down

[11:38] inhale lift the chin up toward the sky

[11:40] only as high as it feels comfortable on

[11:42] your nest

[11:43] exhale chin to chest roll down through

[11:46] the spine fold over your legs

[11:51] inhale curl up through the spine head is

[11:53] the last thing to come up lift the chin

[11:56] shoulders back open the chest

[11:59] exhale curl down through the spine fold

[12:03] all the way forward over the legs

[12:06] i'll do this two more times

[12:08] inhale slowly stack the spine stack the

[12:11] vertebrae look up

[12:15] exhale roll down through the spine

[12:18] gently tilt the tailbone forward as you

[12:20] fold over the legs

[12:22] do it one more time

[12:36] on your next inhalation come back to

[12:39] neutral

[12:40] roll the shoulders up and back a few

[12:42] times breathe deeply

[12:46] ah

[12:49] lovely

[12:52] the ankles to rock the weight forward or

[12:54] roll off onto one hip to come to all

[12:56] fours

[12:58] wrists beneath shoulders knees beneath

[13:00] hips

[13:02] creases of the wrists are parallel to

[13:03] the top of the mat lift the fingers

[13:05] spread them wide through back down

[13:07] through the base of the index fingers

[13:10] and thumbs

[13:12] feel the crown of the head reaching

[13:14] toward the top of the mat

[13:16] navel engages toward the spine

[13:19] nice flat back here we're already waking

[13:22] the core up just by holding this firm

[13:24] posture

[13:26] extend back through the right leg hug

[13:29] the navel in toward the spine

[13:31] kick the left foot out to the left a

[13:33] little roll to the inside of the right

[13:36] foot and then reach the sole of the foot

[13:38] down for the mat

[13:39] route the right arm up to the sky

[13:42] and you may also just kind of choose

[13:45] part of these poses for example if

[13:47] you're not feeling ready to balance

[13:48] maybe you just hang out here that's

[13:50] perfectly fine

[13:52] right arm reaches up literally lift up

[13:55] out of the bottom shoulder reach right

[13:58] arm over ear extend to the fingertips

[14:01] breathe deeply shoulders pull away from

[14:04] ears

[14:06] option to stay here or lift the right

[14:09] leg flex the right foot press out

[14:11] through the right wheel

[14:17] lift the leg a little higher

[14:23] lower it down if it's lifted

[14:26] bring the right hand down bring both

[14:28] knees and feet on rock the hips side to

[14:30] side

[14:34] the second side extend back through the

[14:37] left leg

[14:38] kick the right foot out to the right a

[14:40] little roll to the inside of the left

[14:42] foot plant the sole of the foot down if

[14:44] possible

[14:46] opting to stay here extend the left arm

[14:48] up to the sky

[14:50] lift up out of the bottom shoulder

[14:52] left arm over here reach

[14:57] soften the lips and the hole

[15:01] option to stay here or lift the left leg

[15:04] flex the left foot

[15:12] lift the leg a little higher

[15:19] lower the leg

[15:21] lower the left hand down bring the legs

[15:24] and feet in

[15:25] rock the hip side to side

[40:31] heel toe the back foot in closer shorten

[40:34] the stance

[40:36] of your block

[40:37] to the left side of your left foot just

[40:39] a little

[40:40] and further ahead so you have nice space

[40:42] for balance if you don't have the block

[40:45] no issue

[40:47] right hand

[40:48] comes to the hip

[40:50] hug the navel toward the spine so we're

[40:52] already

[40:53] mindful of the core and taking care of

[40:55] the back

[40:56] left leg is bent

[40:58] hand to the earth

[41:00] press into the left foot and again

[41:02] before we do any stacking we flex the

[41:04] left or excuse me the right toes

[41:07] right toes pull up toward the face

[41:09] strong leg then we begin to stack right

[41:12] hip on top of left

[41:15] ah very nice gaze is focused on one

[41:17] point on the

[41:19] wall to the right of you or the floor

[41:24] and if you are here uncomfortable you

[41:26] may wish to reach the right arm all the

[41:27] way up maybe turn the gaze up toward the

[41:30] right thumb

[41:32] keep the right foot flexed active legs

[41:36] option to stay here if you're wanting to

[41:38] play

[41:39] bend the right knee reach for the

[41:41] outside

[41:42] of the right foot and begin to kick the

[41:44] foot

[41:46] into the hand gaze is focused here for

[41:48] support

[41:51] smile

[41:53] let your face

[41:55] brighten

[42:02] if you have the foot in your hand slowly

[42:04] release it extend back out

[42:09] beautiful

[42:10] reach your right hand down

[42:13] bend the left knee as much as you need

[42:15] to both hands to the floor

[42:17] or the block

[42:18] drop your right hip down so you square

[42:21] the hips

[42:22] kick the right leg up to the sky

[42:24] standing splits

[42:26] forehead comes toward left

[42:28] finger

[42:29] and maybe one or both hands come behind

[42:32] the ankle

[42:33] keep hugging the navel toward the spine

[42:35] breathe deeply

[42:38] i can feel i

[42:40] did not stretch properly this weekend

[42:42] after dancing

[42:45] slow deep breaths lift that leg

[42:59] bend the left leg

[43:01] gracefully step the right foot all the

[43:04] way back

[43:05] windmill the arms up verba dress in it

[43:08] too

[43:10] inhale

[43:12] windmill the arms down step the left leg

[43:15] back move to your vanyasa

[43:24] three slow deep breaths

[43:45] inhale look forward between the hands

[43:48] exhale bend the knees to step

[43:50] or lightly hop to the top of the mat

[43:52] fold forward

[43:55] inhale hard with the nose and the navel

[43:57] towards spine flat back

[43:59] exhale fold

[44:02] press onto the feet inhale reach the

[44:04] arms wide

[44:06] palms touch

[44:08] exhale hands to heart

[44:10] beautiful

[44:12] ah so we've done all this nice work

[44:14] today opening up the hip flexors the

[44:17] front of the hips so we're going to

[44:20] uh move into natarajasana dancing clever

[44:23] pose

[44:27] and as always just take this as

[44:30] comfortably as you can

[44:33] i'll turn

[44:34] away from you so you can see what's

[44:36] happening here

[44:38] open your right arm out to your right

[44:40] palm up to the sky bring your weight

[44:42] into your left foot micro bend in that

[44:45] left leg

[44:47] bend the right leg and reach for the

[44:49] inside of the foot so the thumb points

[44:51] back the hand is to the inside of the

[44:54] foot this allows the shoulder to be nice

[44:56] and open here without any strength

[45:00] if you can't get here maybe you just

[45:02] play with this today that's perfectly

[45:04] fine if you have a strap you can use

[45:05] that now drop the right hip down if you

[45:08] have a hold of the foot so rather than

[45:10] being hiked up drop it down start to

[45:12] come into this squaring position again

[45:14] if possible or really opening through

[45:16] the right shoulder

[45:18] left arm reaches up

[45:21] maybe take chin mudra gently covering

[45:23] the index finger with the thumb and the

[45:25] drishti is focused here so the gaze is

[45:28] focused on one spot on the floor or the

[45:29] wall ahead of you

[45:31] inhale

[45:34] exhale really kick the foot into the

[45:37] hand and once you have this strong

[45:39] motion

[45:40] between your hand and your foot then

[45:42] maybe the body begins to lean forward in

[45:46] the pose keep your focus

[45:49] on one spot breathe deeply extend the

[45:52] left arm forward

[45:59] keep kicking the foot into the hand

[46:01] smile again here

[46:11] when you're ready to come up really kick

[46:13] the foot into the hand

[46:17] slowly release it

[46:20] inhale reach the arms up

[46:23] exhale through the mouth

[46:27] great

[46:29] we'll move on to the second side so this

[46:32] time

[46:33] i'm going to turn my body to the side so

[46:34] you can see a different angle here

[46:37] left arm is out to the left

[46:40] palm is up to the sky

[46:42] weight is now in the right foot micro

[46:44] bend in the standing leg

[46:48] and just she's focused one spot on the

[46:50] floor the wall ahead of you

[46:53] then the left knee

[46:55] reach your hand for the inside of the

[46:58] left foot

[46:59] thumb is pointing

[47:01] back

[47:02] yes thumb is pointing back hand is to

[47:05] the inside of the foot now we drop the

[47:07] left hip down hug the navel toward the

[47:09] spine right arm reaches up take chin

[47:12] mudra if you wish

[47:14] then begin to really kick the foot into

[47:16] the hand so we establish establish this

[47:19] strong connection before we lean forward

[47:23] then if it feels right

[47:25] as you click the foot into the hand

[47:28] and begin to lean forward

[47:31] smile

[47:32] breathe

[47:34] shoulders away from ears

[47:37] it's okay to wobble and fall you can

[47:39] always play with coming back into it

[47:49] when you're ready to come out of the

[47:51] pose really kick the foot into the hand

[47:56] release

[47:58] inhale reach up

[48:02] exhale through the mouth

[48:05] beautiful beautiful take a moment here

[48:08] micro bend in the knees

[48:10] relax the arms and the shoulders close

[48:12] your eyes for a moment

[48:14] feel what's happening inside

[48:33] beautiful

[48:36] slowly make your way down to your mat

[48:41] and

[48:46] i'm deliberating here uh

[48:51] is that going to be enough is the

[48:52] question no we're going to do something

[48:54] different okay

[48:56] so we're going to come all the way down

[48:58] to the belly

[49:05] once you're on your belly extend your

[49:07] right arm out so that your right hand is

[49:09] directly out

[49:11] from your right shoulder so rather than

[49:13] this or this

[49:14] the right hand is directly out

[49:17] from the right shoulder

[49:20] place your left palm on the ground

[49:23] turn your gaze over toward oop i'm going

[49:25] to have to change it for this

[49:28] sorry friends or i should say thank you

[49:29] for your patience with me for though

[49:32] navigating

[49:34] without

[49:35] the headset my headset has been

[49:38] finicky

[49:40] okay

[49:41] so the left hand is rooted the right

[49:44] hand is directly out from the right

[49:45] shoulder

[49:46] the right side of the head is to the

[49:48] earth

[49:49] press into your left hand to stack your

[49:52] left hip on top of your right

[49:55] and then if it feels good bend your left

[49:58] knee and place your left foot behind you

[50:01] so a really big

[50:02] opener here in the chest

[50:04] reach your left arm up to the sky

[50:07] and then feel as if you were trying to

[50:09] touch the backs of your hands together

[50:11] behind your back

[50:13] so your left palm is up to the sky and

[50:16] at the same time that left arm is

[50:17] reaching back behind you

[50:20] breathe deeply

[50:22] close the others if you

[50:30] and of course if you're not feeling

[50:32] much of a stretch if anything at all

[50:35] you can also place the right sole of the

[50:37] foot on the floor as

[50:39] well but that's only if you're not

[50:41] feeling much of anything

[50:47] i did a lot of work in the shoulders

[50:49] today so let's give them this nice

[50:51] stretch

[51:05] relax any clenching in the jaw slow deep

[51:09] breathing

[51:30] one more slow deep breath here

[51:38] very gracefully bring your left hand

[51:40] down to support

[51:42] your belly coming back to the mat

[51:46] oh and then we'll change sides

[51:49] i'm scooting over so i have enough space

[51:51] here

[51:53] so again we start

[51:56] by bringing the left hand directly out

[51:58] from the left shoulder

[52:00] the left side of the head can be on the

[52:02] mat plant the right palm press yourself

[52:05] up onto your left hip so the right hip

[52:08] stacks on top of the left

[52:10] bend the left knee excuse me bend the

[52:12] right knee to place the right foot

[52:13] behind you

[52:15] and then reach that right arm up and

[52:18] back with the palm up toward the sky

[52:20] so as if you were trying to touch

[52:23] your hands together

[52:26] breathe

[52:38] okay

[52:47] close the eyes if you wish

[53:11] as always

[53:12] there's no need to sign

[53:15] in our practice

[53:18] so if this feels like it's too much of a

[53:20] stretch for you

[53:21] i invite you to back off or come out of

[53:24] the pose completely

[53:26] there's no need to create more stress

[53:29] and

[53:31] agitated energy or emotion

[53:34] in our system

[53:59] inhale

[54:03] exhale slowly

[54:06] bring the right hand down make yourself

[54:09] make your way back into your belly

[54:21] with your palms planted

[54:23] press yourself up onto your forearm

[54:28] stay here for a moment in sphinx pose so

[54:30] the hands

[54:32] move out directly from the elbows

[54:36] pubic bone is created on the earth and

[54:38] if you'd like to

[54:40] deepen the sensation here you can press

[54:43] up so lift up

[54:45] and also pull your elbows back

[54:48] toward your hips

[54:50] so the chest starts to reach forward now

[54:53] if there's any sprain there no need to

[54:55] do it that's just if you're not feeling

[54:57] much of a stretch otherwise

[55:00] chin is slightly tucked back of the neck

[55:02] as long

[55:04] breathe deeply

[55:14] beautiful

[55:17] come back down to the belly and then

[55:20] however it works for your body roll over

[55:24] onto your back

[55:33] and then the knees

[55:35] allow

[55:36] the knees to fall over to the left take

[55:38] the arms out to a t or cactus them

[55:42] right shoulder

[55:44] you can use your left hand to support

[55:46] that top leg coming down if that feels

[55:48] good

[55:55] baby whatever

[56:23] slowly come back up through center

[56:27] this time we drop the knees

[56:29] over to the right

[56:32] gaze is over left shoulder again you can

[56:35] use your right hand

[56:36] to assist that top leg coming down if

[56:38] that feels good

[56:41] soft lip soft face off god

[57:14] inhale to slowly come back to center

[57:20] plant the feet on the earth

[57:22] cross the left ankle over the right knee

[57:25] flex the left toes so we protect the

[57:27] knee by activating the leg

[57:30] option is stay here lift the right foot

[57:33] up thread the arms through interlace the

[57:35] hands in front over behind the right

[57:37] knee

[57:38] relax the upper body chin is slightly

[57:40] tucked

[57:42] right knee toward your left knee gently

[57:44] presses away

[58:26] slowly release

[58:28] extend the legs up to the sky

[58:31] point and flex the feet

[58:35] change sides plant the feet on the earth

[58:38] this time which side was that right

[58:40] ankle crosses over left knee flex the

[58:42] right toes flex the right foot option to

[58:45] stay here or lift the left foot thread

[58:48] the arms through interlace the hands in

[58:50] front of her behind the left knee

[58:53] left knee towards you right knee gently

[58:55] presses away upper bodies relax

[58:58] breathe deeply

[59:01] and when i say upper body's relaxed i

[59:03] was working with the

[59:05] someone one-on-one the other day

[59:07] and they said

[59:09] i'm engaging my muscles so how can i be

[59:11] relaxed

[59:13] and there's some truth to that the idea

[59:15] here is though even though we're using

[59:17] the strength of the arms to

[59:20] pull the left knee toward the chest

[59:23] we're letting go of any sense of forcing

[59:25] or efforting

[59:27] meaning we're engaging to the point

[59:29] where we are able to

[59:31] support ourselves in the pose without

[59:32] feeling like we're spraining so whatever

[59:35] that means for you i invite you to

[59:36] explore that

[1:00:10] wonderful slowly release

[1:00:13] extend the legs up to the sky

[1:00:15] roll through the ankles

[1:00:18] change directions

[1:00:22] and now for the last minute of practice

[1:00:24] we'll have yogi's choice so any anything

[1:00:27] your body's asking for just take one

[1:00:29] minute here so any final pose that you

[1:00:32] feel you're needing maybe you'd like to

[1:00:33] take an inversion

[1:00:35] or maybe a backbend or another twist

[1:00:39] or maybe you're ready for savasana

[1:00:42] feel free to take this last moment

[1:00:45] to give your body what it needs

[1:01:02] make sure you've changed sides if your

[1:01:04] posture requires two sides

[1:01:21] and now we'll move into savasana make

[1:01:23] our way towards the vasana at least

[1:01:27] extend the legs down the mat take the

[1:01:29] feet wide toes fall out to the sides

[1:01:32] if it feels good you can tuck the

[1:01:33] shoulders under you a little

[1:01:35] in a slightly tucked back of the neck as

[1:01:37] long arms are extended down the sides of

[1:01:40] the body

[1:01:41] let the palms up to the sky

[1:01:43] allow there to be some space between

[1:01:45] your arms and your torso as possible

[1:01:49] make any little adjustments or fidget as

[1:01:52] much as you need

[1:01:53] to be able to commit to stillness

[1:01:57] and once you've moved around find that

[1:02:00] still place

[1:02:04] one of the gifts of committing to

[1:02:05] stillness in the body is that it

[1:02:07] requires the mind

[1:02:09] to eventually focus and spill

[1:02:12] and in savasana we practice

[1:02:15] letting go

[1:02:19] you might even feel

[1:02:21] that the body completely dissolves in

[1:02:23] this posture sometimes

[1:02:27] so with your eyes closed let your

[1:02:29] breathing be natural let go of the need

[1:02:31] to control your thoughts emotions breath

[1:02:35] body

[1:02:38] and rather practice being the witness of

[1:02:41] all of these experiences

[1:02:44] if you can watch your mind you are not

[1:02:48] the mind if you can

[1:02:49] observe emotions you are not emotions

[1:02:54] you are the witness

[1:03:00] allow yourself to be still

[1:03:04] how all of these experiences come and go

[1:03:09] without you holding on to them

[1:04:55] i invite you to stay in this pose as

[1:04:58] long as you like

[1:05:08] if you're feeling ready to complete

[1:05:13] take a slow deep breath in

[1:05:27] and with each exhalation feel like

[1:05:29] you're letting go

[1:05:33] allowing dissolving

[1:05:35] arriving becoming

[1:05:47] rolling move the fingers and toes

[1:06:04] inhale reach the arms up by the ears

[1:06:06] take a long stretch and exhale through

[1:06:09] the mouth

[1:06:20] bend the knees to roll over onto one

[1:06:22] side

[1:06:34] use your hands to slowly come up to a

[1:06:37] seat the eyes closed

[1:06:49] arms touch at the heart and angela mudra

[1:06:52] in this expression of gratitude

[1:06:59] offer yourself gratitude

[1:07:02] a smile a hug maybe

[1:07:08] and we'll complete

[1:07:10] offering the benefit of our practice for

[1:07:13] all beings and all of creation by

[1:07:15] chanting

[1:07:16] lokas

[1:07:19] three times

[1:07:21] may all beings be happy peaceful and

[1:07:24] free

[1:07:25] and will complete with om shanti santi

[1:08:01] [Music]

[1:08:06] oh

[1:08:18] [Music]

[1:08:28] [Music]

[1:08:37] this great love and gratitude

[1:10:22] next monday we're going to have a

[1:10:24] meditation

[1:10:26] to

[1:10:28] use the power of visualization

[1:10:31] which activates so much

[1:10:33] the power of visualization but also the

[1:10:35] power of intention and emotion and

[1:10:38] thought especially for those of us who

[1:10:39] maybe don't really feel like we connect

[1:10:41] with visualization

[1:10:43] to offer

[1:10:45] healing presence warmth kindness love

[1:10:48] to ourselves to those in our lives and

[1:10:50] to the whole planet

[1:10:52] so that's our meditation on monday and

[1:10:54] then tuesday we'll oh wait yeah tuesday

Alignment-based vinyasa emphasizes precise positioning and body awareness in each pose rather than rushing through flows. Students receive detailed cuing about joint placement, muscle engagement, and safe transitions, with the goal of building strength and flexibility while preventing injury through proper form.
Frame your sankalpa (intention) in present tense as if it already exists in your life—for example, "I am peaceful" rather than "I want to be peaceful." This creates what's called a "future memory" that begins rewiring your experience toward the desired state rather than keeping it perpetually out of reach.
