Amma

Mata Amritanandamayi, universally known as Amma or "Mother," is a Hindu spiritual leader, humanitarian, and guru whose practice of darshan—embracing each person who comes to her—has defined her ministry since the 1970s. Born Sudhamani Idamannel in 1953 in the fishing village of Parayakadavu in Kerala, India, she is the founder and chairperson of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, a worldwide network of ashrams, charitable projects, and educational institutions. Amma is known for having embraced more than 40 million people across six continents, a physical expression of unconditional love that forms the core of her teaching.

Her spiritual practice is rooted in the bhakti tradition of Hinduism, particularly devotion to Krishna and the Divine Mother. Amma leads bhajan sessions—call-and-response devotional singing in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil—that often last for hours and serve as the primary vehicle for her teachings. Unlike many gurus who deliver formal discourses, Amma's method is experiential: participants sing, meditate, and receive her embrace. She composes many of the bhajans herself, and recordings of these devotional songs have been distributed through the Amritapuri ashram and various outlets worldwide. Her approach emphasizes seva, or selfless service, as equal in importance to meditation and prayer.

Amma's global reach expanded significantly after her first tour to the United States in 1987. Since then she has traveled annually, holding programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. She typically spends 20 or more hours at a single event, embracing thousands of attendees without break. Her organization, Embracing the World, oversees disaster-relief efforts, free hospitals, housing projects, pensions for widows and the physically challenged, and educational programs across India and beyond. The Math operates the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham university system with campuses across India, and has delivered aid in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amma has addressed the United Nations on multiple occasions, including the Interfaith Summit in 2000, the World Parliament of Religions, and the UN Academic Impact program. She received the Gandhi-King Award for Non-Violence in 2002 and was one of three recipients of the Cinema for Peace Award in 2012 alongside Kofi Annan and Shimon Peres. In 2014, she became the first Indian to receive an honorary doctorate from the State University of New York for her humanitarian work. She has also been honored by governments in India and abroad for her relief and development initiatives.

Amma continues to live at the Amritapuri ashram in Kerala, where she holds regular darshan programs and leads annual Brahmasthanam festivals. She maintains a demanding schedule, often seeing visitors from dawn until the following morning. The ashram hosts thousands of resident and visiting devotees each year, and her birthday celebration in September draws crowds in the tens of thousands. Her talks, bhajans, and darshan programs are streamed online, and her organization publishes her teachings in more than 40 languages. Recent initiatives include the distribution of free meals to millions during the pandemic and the expansion of vocational training programs for rural women.

For those encountering her work today, Amma offers a direct, embodied path rooted in service, devotion, and the conviction that compassion expressed through action can address both individual suffering and systemic need.
